The Ascot Chase 2024 will certainly be quality over quantity with just four runners heading to post for the Grade One feature on Saturday. But with last year’s runner-up Pic D’Orhy, plus Ahoy Senor and Cheltenham Festival winner L’Homme Presse, it’s still a contest not to be missed.
Ascot Chase 2024 Runners: L’Homme Presse Looks The One To Beat
Trainer Venetia Williams has won the Ascot Chase just the once, which came back in 1999 with the former Foxhunter, who also went onto win the King George VI Chase in 1998 – Teeton Mill.
However, she’s got a great chance of ending that 25-year gap with her top-rated L’Homme Presse, who heads the ratings (170) and the betting for this year’s renewal.
After unseating in the 2022 King George the horse had a few setbacks that kept him off the track until last month. When he returned with a bang in the Fleur De Lys Chase at Lingfield (watch below).
That run came off a 391-day break and despite looking in need of the outing had enough class to see of the useful Protektorat by 2 1/4 lengths.
The form of that run was done no harm with the runner-up finishing third (4 3/4 lengths) behind last year’s Ascot Chase winner Shishkin in the Denman Chase last weekend.
L’Homme Presse can also be expected to have come on for that Lingfield run and is also a proven course and distance winner at Ascot, after taking the Graduation Chase there in 2021. There’s a lot to like.
The 9 year-old is also around 9/1 with the best UK horse racing betting sites for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
A win here and it will be all systems go and a crack at Galopin Des Champs on March 15th.

Pic D’Orhy Looks A Big Danger
The Paul Nicholls camp have won the Ascot Chase with some big names in the past – Kauto Star, Silviniaco Conti and Cyrname – and will be looking to add to that with two-time course winner Pic D’Orhy on Saturday.
However, you feel Pic D’Orhy, despite being a very good horse, is just below the level of that trio.
This 9 year-old will be having his 30th career run at the weekend and having won 12 of those certainly knows how to get the job done.
The most recent of his course wins came this season in the 1965 Chase. In the race made famous with Shishkin refusing to start (watch below).
Pic D’Orhy has since come out second best in the Silviniaco Conti Chase at Kempton to the useful Banbridge. Getting run out of things close home, so will need to bounce back again here.
The return to Ascot will be a plus though and owner Johnny de la Hey is no stranger to winning this race – having paid the bills for the 2019 winner Cyrname.
He’s also finished in the first two in all of his last seven races and another bold show looks on the cards.
However, he’s still got 8lbs to find with our Ascot Chase tip L’Homme Presse and after getting outstayed last time at Kempton.
You also feel the stronger stamina reserves of the Venetia William horse might see him having to settle for silver again.
Ahoy Senor Has Plenty To Prove
Of the rest, Ahoy Senor is likely to have some supporters being the second top-rated in the field (163), but this Lucinda Russell horse is hard to catch right and is now five races without a success. His last win now came in the Cotswold Chase over a year ago in 2023 and was last seen running fourth to Capodanno in the same race at the end of last month.
