Fresh reports suggest Premier League coverage could become even more fragmented in the not so distant future, with tech behemoth Apple eager to expand on their venture into live sports.

Reports indicate that several major players are considering bids to enter the arena for live Premier League coverage, with global tech giants Apple said to be the most notable name among the interested parties.

The existing deal for Premier League broadcasting rights was agreed just last year and is worth a total of £10.4billion, with around half of that figure coming from their domestic partnerships with Sky, BT and Amazon.

It is no secret that the commercial pull of the Premier League has made it an enticing prospect for investors, and broadcasting figures alone are world-leading with around 3.5 billion watchers across the globe.

Apple have diversified their business over the past decade, branching out into broadcasting to rival popular platforms such as Amazon. The company recently agreed a £2 billion deal to broadcast Major League Soccer matches for the next decade, while they will also stream Major League Baseball on Fridays, indicating their new-found interest in providing live sporting coverage.

Although it is unclear how the rights will be split between providers by the time the next cycle rolls around in 2024,  Apple are reportedly interested in showing both Premier League games as well as lower league matches in the English Football League.

It is worth noting that similar companies are ramping up their pursuit of live sport, most notably direct Premier League rivals Amazon who have recently added to their UK portfolio with coverage of the US Open, as well as the Champions League and NFL games on Thursday nights.
