Current Dutch champions Ajax have appointed former Everton and Netherlands defender John Heitinga for the remainder of the season.

The Amsterdam-based team have chosen former Under-23 coach, John Heitinga to take the reigns until the end of the season. The former Everton player got off to the best start with a 4-1 win at Excelsior on Sunday. But he still faces a very daunting battle as Ajax sit in fourth in the table, five points behind Eredivisie leaders Feyenoord.

Ajax said: “Ajax and John Heitinga have agreed on the 39-year-old ex-football player remaining head coach of Ajax for the rest of the season. “Dwight Lodeweges has been appointed as assistant coach in Heitinga’s technical staff, with immediate effect.”

Ajax are notorious for strengthening from within, building a team around academy players and selling them on for huge profits. The decision to select a manager that has been managing in the academy is something chief executive, Edwin van der sar was very keen on.

Edwin van der Sar said: “We are convinced that this is the right solution. John is on a clear and steady path, which has resulted in him developing himself very well over the years.”

Former manager, Alfred Schreuder was only at the club for just over six months but after a run of seven competitive games without a win, he was relieved of his duties. Ajax had only lost once to PSV Eindhoven but after the defeat to Volendam, Schreuder’s time was up.
