Saturday’s 2023 Sun Chariot Stakes betting will be focused around the classy John Gosden-trained filly INSPIRAL, who will be ridden by Frankie Dettori in what will be the Italian jockeys last ride in the Newmarket Group One.
Frankie Looking For Only Second Sun Chariot Stakes Win
The big UK horse race this week is the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket and at this stage there are nine entries for the contest that carries a £155,953 first prize.
One of those runners, it’s the John Gosden-trained INSPIRAL, who will be ridden by Frankie Dettori in what will also be his final ride in the Newmarket Group One with his retirement on the horizon.
Frankie has also surprisingly only won the Sun Chariot once before and that came way back in 1992 with a horse called Red Slippers, who was trained by his old pal Luca Cumani.
Inspiral has been put in as the clear Virgin Bet Sun Chariot Stakes betting favourite with the best UK horse racing betting sites and it’s easy to see why.
This classy 4 year-old filly has won 7 of her 11 career starts, including four at the highest level. The most recent of those Group One wins came last time out when winning the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois at Deauville (Watch below).
She’s also proven at the Newmarket course with a win on the Rowley Mile back in 2021 in the Fillies’ Mile and will come into the race as the top-rated in the field (118).
With Dettori retiring from race riding at the end of this season this will be his last ride in the Sun Chariot – so can he finish up with another of those famous ‘Frankie Flying Dismounts’?
Frankie Also Looking For 500 Newmarket Wins
Oh, and with Frankie currently on 499 Newmarket winners – he’ll be looking to hit the landmark 500 with Inspiral.
However, Dettori, also has one other booked ride on the card – Queen Emma (2:40) – so could hit the 500 winners before Inspiral – we’ll have to see.
After this race, he’s expected to have his last race in the 2023 Melbourne Cup on Tues, 7th Nov, then after that there are possible rumours that Frankie might be staying Down Under and entering the I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here jungle – watch this space.

Trainer John Gosden Has Won The Sun Chariot Stakes Twice Before
Inspiral’s trainer – John Gosden – has mopped up two Sun Chariot Stakes races in the past.
The most recent of those came in 2020 with Nazeef, with this other success in the race back in 1991 with Ristna – the year before Frankie rode his only winner in the race.
Who Are The Biggest Dangers To Inspiral?
The final Sun Chariot Stakes runners will be declared on Thursday 5th October, but at this stage the biggest dangers to Inspiral winning a fifth Group One are the French-trained Mqse De Sevigne and the Irish raider Just Beautiful.
Mqse De Sevigne would be looking to become the first French winner since Esoterique (also trained by Andre Fabre) in 2015, but runners from France do have a good record with five wins since 2009.
Just Beautiful come from the Paddy Twomey yard in Ireland and was last seen running a decent third to the this season’s 1000 Guineas runner-up Tahiyra at Leopardstown in the Matron Stakes.
We could also see the Aidan O’Brien runner Meditate heading to Newmarket as the yard look for their fourth success in the race. She was fourth in the already mentioned Matron Stakes and Ryan Moore, who has won the Sun Chariot Stakes three times, has already been booked to ride.
