2023 Shergar Cup Trends: ITV Racing Stats On Saturday 12th August

The ITV4 horse racing cameras are in action again this Saturday as they head to Ascot racecourse in Berkshire to take in the ‘love it, or hate it’ 2023 Shergar Cup Meeting – a  racing team event where the jockeys are in squads and win points based on where they finish in each race.

There are six races in the Shergar Cup competition for the jockeys to rack-up points in with team captains Frankie Dettori (Europe), Hayley Turner (The Girls), Luke Morris (Great Britain & Ireland) and Vincent Ho (Rest of the World).

With the girls team, who will also feature Hollie Doyle and Saffie Osborne, having won 4 of the last 7 Shergar Cups – are they the ones to follow?

Or will it be four-time winning captain Frankie Dettori doing the business again, in what will be his final Shergar Cup appearance? See the Frankie Dettori Shergar Cup rides here.

You can find out more about the format, the full race schedule and how the points are scored below.

Shergar Cup Stats for Ascot Horse Racing: Help Find The Winners For Saturday’s Meeting.

1:35 – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash (Handicap) Cl2 5f ITV4

The first thing to note here is that the Clive Cox-trained Tis Marvellous has won this race twice since 2018 and is back for more at the age of 9. He likes Ascot and is dropped to a mark of 102 so is certainly well-handicapped having won this in 2021 off this rating. But he does need to bounce back from a two poor runs this season – including last time when last in the Wokingham Stakes.

Horses aged 4 and 5 have the best recent record, so Existent, Bond Chairman, Chipstead, Tees Spirit, Dream Composer and Acklam Express (res).

With 50% of the last 14 favourites winning too, this is worth a look come post time.

Also note horses with 4+ runs that season and with ALL of the last 14 winners NOT winning last time out then recent scorers – Rogue Lightning and Intrinsic Bond are overlooked.

Overall, Existent and Chipstead tick a fair few boxes and are chanced.

  • 14/14 – Failed to win their last race
  • 13/14 – Raced at Ascot previously
  • 13/14 – Priced 6/1 or shorter in the betting market
  • 12/14 – Had 4 or more runs that season
  • 11/14 – Aged 4 or 5 years-old
  • 10/14 – Favourites placed
  • 9/14 – Won at least 3 times in their career
  • 8/14 – Had won over 5f previously
  • 7/14 – Winning Favourites (1 joint)
  • 6/14 – Raced at Ascot last time out
  • 5/14 – Winning distance – 1 or more lengths
  • 2/14 – Trained by Clive Cox (including 2 of the last 4)
  • Tis Marvellous won the race in 2021 and 2018

2:10 – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers (Handicap) Cl2 2m ITV4

Another possible past winner here with Themaxwecan (2022 hero), but is a reserve so needs a few to come out.

Horses aged 4 or 5 have done best – winning 72% of the last 18 runnings – so just Law Of The Sea, Zinc White (res), Prydwen and Post Impressionist fit the bill here.

The favourites have won 6 of the last 18, which is a fair return.

Having a recent run (last 2 weeks) has been a plus too, so another bonus for Post Impressionist, who ran just 7 days ago. While other to tick this stat are – The Grand Visir, Zinc White (res), The Very Man, Law Of The Sea and Alright Sunshine, who is just outside this on 16 days.

  • 16/18 – Priced 9/1 or shorter in the betting
  • 15/18 – Rated between 86-94
  • 15/18 – Had raced at the track before
  • 14/18 – Had raced within the last 2 weeks
  • 13/18 – Aged 4 or 5 years-old
  • 13/18 – Had won between 2-5 times before (flat)
  • 12/18 – Favourites placed in the top 4
  • 12/18 – Ran at either Ascot (5) or Goodwood (7) last time out
  • 10/18 – Came from the top 3 in the betting
  • 6/18 – Winning favourites
  • 2/18 – Trained by Ian Williams
  • 2/18 – Won last time out
  • No winner from stall 1 in the last 16 runnings
  • 4 of the last 13 winners came from stall 9
  • Horses from stall 9 placed in the top three in 7 of the last 15 runnings
  • Themaxwecan won the race in 2022

2:45 – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge (Handicap) Cl3 1m4f ITV4

The 2022 winner Pride Of Priory is back and despite being a reserve there is already one non-runner so he’s in.

ALL of the last 17 winners were aged 6 or younger, so a decent trend that is a negative for the older runners – Andaleep, Dark Jedi and Soto Sizzler.

With 25% of the last 16 winners coming from stall 5, then Nolton Cross has this on its side, but 11 of the last 16 winners also hailed between stalls 5-8 – good news also for Wooton’Sun (res), East Asia (7) and Andaleep.

Not a great race for the favourite either with only 2 winning market leaders in the last 18.

Nolton Cross and course and distance winner La Yakel are the ones chances with the 4 year-olds having the best recent records – winning 11 of the last 18.

  • 17/18 – Aged 6 or younger
  • 16/18 – Raced within the last 5 weeks
  • 15/18 – Won over 1m3f (or further) previously
  • 15/18 – Won between 1-4 times previously
  • 15/18 – Officially rated between 87-94
  • 11/18 – Aged 4 years-old
  • 10/18 – Came from outside the top 3 in the betting market
  • 10/18 – Winning distance – 1 length or less
  • 9/18 – Placed in the top 3 last time out
  • 8/18 – Priced 9/1 or bigger in the betting market
  • 6/18 – Had run at Ascot previously
  • 6/18 – Won last time out
  • 2/18 – Favourites that won
  • Pride Of Priory won the race in 2022
  • One winner from stall 1 in the last 16 runnings
  • 4 of the last 16 winners came from stall 5
  • 11 of the last 16 winners came from stalls 5-8 (inc)

3:20 – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile (Handicap) Cl2 1m ITV4

Another race the 4 and 5 year-olds have dominated in – winning a massive 17 of the last 18.

Therefore, this is a big plus for Perotto, The Wizard Of Eye, Empirestateofmind, Excel Power, Positive Impact, Silent Film, Outbreak (res) and Rainbow Fire.

83% of the last 18 winners came from the top three in the betting too and 4 of the last 7 won from stall 12 (Excel Power).

Having a run in the last 5 weeks is worth looking at too (89%) – not good news for Bear Force One (res), Positive Impact or Fox Tal.

Perotto, who was a fair 7th (of 20) in the Golden Mile last time at Goodwood, and Excel Power get the nod.

  • 18/18 – Won over at least a mile before
  • 17/18 – Failed to win last time out
  • 17/18 – Aged 4 or 5 years-old
  • 17/18 – Rated between 92-100
  • 16/18 – Priced 8/1 or shorter in the betting
  • 16/18 – Raced within the last 5 weeks
  • 15/18 – Came from the top 3 in the betting
  • 14/18 – Won between 2-4 times before
  • 13/18 – Favourites that finished in the top 4
  • 10/18 – Had run at Ascot before
  • 4/18 – Ran at Goodwood last time out
  • 5/18 – Winning favourites
  • 3/18 – Trained by Andrew Balding
  • Jungle Cove won the race in 2022
  • 3 of the last 16 winners came from stall 1
  • 4 of the last 7 winners came from stall 12
  • 13 or the last 17 winners returned 6/1 or shorter in the betting

3:55 – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic (Handicap) (Bobis Race) Cl3 1m4f – ITV4

A good race in recent years for the Johnston yard, so their runners French Invasion and Struth can’t be overlooked.

With 9 of the last 13 winners hailing from stalls 5, 7 or 8 too, then more plusses for French Invasion and Struth, plus Satin.

92% of the last 13 winners having raced 3+ times that season, this is not ideal for the fancied Rajasthan, who has only been out once.

Finally, horses rated between 84-90 have stood out too – and only four fit the bill here – Rajasthan, Rogue Sea, Sovereign Spirit and Intinso.

  • 12/13 – Raced 3 or more times that season
  • 11/13 – Returned 8/1 or shorter in the betting
  • 10/13 – Won over 1m2f or further previously
  • 10/13 – Winning distance of 1 length or less
  • 10/13 – Officially rated between 84-90
  • 7/13 – Favourites placed
  • 4/13 – Raced at Ascot last time out
  • 4/13 – Trained by Mark Johnston
  • 4/13 – Favourites that won
  • 9 of the last 13 winners came from stalls 5, 7 or 8

4:30 – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint (Handicap) (Bobis Race) Cl2 6f ITV4

12 of the last 18 winners were rated between 86-95, so this would be a negative for the top two on the card – the winning machine Quinault and He’s A Monster.

4 of the last 7 winners came from stall 12, so He’s A Monster will be trying to back this trend up.

With 12 of the last 18 winners coming from the top 3 in the betting and also returning 6/1 or shorter, this can also help.

The consistent Washington Heights seems to have a lot going for him again, while with the Roger Charlton camp having a fair record in the race their Zaman Jemil, who won well at Thirsk last time, is also chanced,

  • 16/18 – Ran within the last 4-5 weeks
  • 16/18 – Won over 6f previously
  • 15/18 – Priced 8/1 or shorter in the betting market
  • 13/18 – Won between 2-3 times previously
  • 12/18 – Officially rated between 86-95
  • 12/18 – Came from the top three in the betting market
  • 12/18 – Priced 6/1 or shorter in the betting market
  • 12/18 – Favourites placed
  • 7/18 – Had run at Ascot previously
  • 5/18 – Won last time out
  • 5/18 – Winning Favourites
  • 3/18 – Won by the Roger Charlton yard
  • 6 of the last 15 winners came from stalls 5-8 (inc)
  • 4 of the last 7 winners came from stalls 12
