Nunthorpe Trends: Highfield Princess Looks To Become The Latest York Back-to-Back Sprint Winner

The Group One Nunthorpe Stakes is the big feature race on the Friday of the York Ebor Festival as some of the best sprinters in the world do battel of the 5f trip.

In recent years we’ve seen top horses like Battaash, Mecca’s Angel and Borderlescott win the race twice and the latest horse to try and land ‘back-to-back’ Nunthorpe Stakes is Highfield Princess.

This John Quinn runner dotted up by 2 1/2 lengths last year in the race and the best UK horse racing betting sites make her a warm order to follow-up at York races.

She also heads here having impressed in the Group Two King George Qatar Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and looks to have more to fear from Bradsell, who beat her in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot back in June.

Our Top Five Nunthorpe Stakes Trends

See below our highlighted five of the best Nunthorpe Stakes trends to apply to the final runners, which will be declared on Wednesday 23rd August.

1. A Top 5 Finish Last Time Is Key

You suspect most of the Nunthorpe Stakes runners will fit into the ‘top 5 finish’ trend, but this is still a good starting point that can hopefully rule out one or two with a massive 90% of the last 21 winners being placed 5th or better in their most recent race.

For example, if they run – Azure Blue and Dramatised – would both have this trend to overcome.

2. Being Drawn 7 Or Higher Has Helped

The Nunthorpe Stakes draw will be released on Wednesday 23rd August and this is something to take note of.

10 of the last 14 winners (71%) came from stalls 7 or higher, including last year’s winner Highfield Princess from the 14 berth.

Plus, is we couple this with the trend that tells us 18 of the last 21 winners also came from stalls 11 or lower, then this gives us a magic range between 7-11 to look for – 60% of the last 10 winners hailed from this draw span.

3. Respect Horses Aged Between 4-7 Years-old

Next up for the 2023 Nunthorpe Stakes trends is age.

In recent years horses aged between 4-7 years-old have had the best records – winning a massive 91% of the last 21.

Yes, we did see Winter Power winning as a 3 year-old in 2021, but 10 of the last 11 have still been aged 4,5,6 or 7.

The oldest winner in recent times was Bahamian Pirate, who was winning as a 9 year-old in 2004.

However, since 1922 all barring that 2004 winner have been aged 7 or younger.

4. Filles and Mares Have A Top Nunthorpe Stakes Record

We saw Highfield Princess flying the ‘Girl Power’ flag last year and in recent times it’s been a top race for the ladies.

There have been 8 winning fillies or mares take the spoils in the last 12 runnings, with Marsha and Mecaa’s Angel (2 wins) a couple of others to go in since 2015.

5. Look For Horses That Ran At Goodwood Last Time Out

Finally, having had a recent run at Goodwood has been another of the better Nunthorpe Stakes trends to look for.

This stat has paid out in 8 of the last 13 renewals and will be trying to be advertised again this year with Highfield Princess, who won the King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on August 4th, ticking this box.
