Chepstow races today

We’re lucky to have races at Chepstow today at all . The brainchild of several businessmen and members of the local gentry, difficulty in raising funds to purchase the racecourse site on the Piercefield Park Estate near St Aravans outside the town of Chepstow on the River Wye in Monmouthshire meant there was a shaky start.

The area has ties to horse racing dating back beyond the August 1926 opening of Chepstow to the late Victorian period. At the time of The Great Depression, it was a struggle to make ends meet here. Less than a year after its inaugural meeting, the first race under the National Hunt code was held in March 1927.

Ever since then and right up to Chepstow races today, the course is used for jumps meetings in autumn, winter and early spring, and for Flat racing for the rest of the year. Once the site of Welsh versions of the Classics, like the Epsom Derby, Oaks and St Leger, Chepstow Racecourse events on the level were initially the most prestigious.

Things changed in the years following the Second World War, however, with National Hunt races rising to prominence. In 1949, Wales’s most important jumps race, the Welsh Grand National, switched to this track after the closures of Ely Racecourse in Cardiff and Caerleon at Newport. This Grade 3 handicap steeplechase is now the most important of all races at Chepstow today.

Originally taking place over Easter, the Welsh Grand National has been on a fixed date in the calendar of 27 December (the day after Boxing Day) since 1969. Another big event at this track is the Persian War Novices’ Hurdle. Inaugurated in 1977 and enjoying Grade 2 status, this contest is a highlights of the Jump Season Opener Weekend held on the second Friday and Saturday in October.

Configuration of Chepstow Races Today

Lying close to the Severn Estuary into which the River Wye flows, the left-handed and undulating oval of Chepstow Racecourse is almost two miles round for a complete circuit. There are extremes of going, depending on the time of year. During the winter months, the ground gets very heavy – so much so that, if the Welsh Grand National ends up being abandoned in its post-Christmas slot, there’s a card in January when it can be rescheduled for.

Over the summer, when the Flat racing at Chepstow takes place, there’s the opposite problem. Ground staff need to water the track believe it or not, including the mile-long straight course used for sprints and races up to that distance, so that underfoot conditions aren’t too firm. The run-in on the Flat is just over half-a-mile and much shorter for National Hunt events.

Hurdle races at Chepstow today see horses tackle seven flights on a complete circuit. There are four in the back straight on the climb up to the ruins of Piercefield House, then three more after turning for home. The final flight is less than a furlong from the line. That means there are 10 hurdles to jump in the Persian War and Grade 3 Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle.

Steeplechasers in Chepstow races today have it a lot tougher. There are 11 fences to cross on a complete circuit with six fences down the back and five more coming up the home straight. Those include open ditches as the second one in each line. That means a total of 23 fences jumped in the Welsh Grand National including the last before the winning post three times.

Jumps Season Opener Weekend

Although there is jumps racing all year round now, the two-day meeting at Chepstow races today in early October is seen as the official start to the core National Hunt season. They call this event the Jumps Season Opener Weekend. The first day, now a Friday, has the Persian War Novices’ Hurdle as its feature plus a four-year-olds only handicap among the supporting races on the card.

On the Saturday, meanwhile, there’s a juvenile hurdle for three-year-olds won by some useful types and a number of handicaps. These include a contest that honours steeplechasing great and 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Native River and the Silver Trophy over hurdles. A Listed novice chase event for the Robert Mottram Memorial Trophy is also at this meeting with full details of all key races below:

Jump Season Opener Weekend Race Name Class of Race Type of Race Distance When

Welsh Grand National Day

Long-established at the most prestigious horse racing event in Wales, the biggest of all races at Chepstow today is the Welsh Grand National. Run as a handicap over a gruelling three-and-three-quarter miles on invariably soft or heavy ground, the supporting card contains the only Grade 1 in this British nation. The Finale Juvenile Hurdle is a top level race for three-year-olds.

Welsh Grand National race day, sponsored for a long time by Coral – one of the biggest betting sites and bookies in the UK – also has more valuable handicaps on the card. Besides those there are lower class maiden and novice hurdles, plus a novices’ limited handicap chase. Here are the key races from the 27 December card at Chepstow Racecourse:

Welsh Grand National Day Race Name Class of Race Type of Race Distance
Coral Handicap Chase Class 2 Handicap Chase 2m 3½f
Finale Juvenile Hurdle Grade 1 3yo Hurdle Race 2m
Coral Handicap Hurdle Class 2 Handicap Hurdle 2m 7½f
Welsh Grand National Grade 3 Handicap Chase 3m 6½f
