Historians agree that horse racing outside Exeter in the Devon countryside dates back to the period known as the Restoration of the Monarchy in the 17th Century. Charles II wasn’t the only Stuart sovereign to love the sport either with his niece Queen Anne also keen on horses. While definitive records go back to the early 19th Century and beyond, it is said this track was created because of Charles’s passion for racing.
Situated on Haldon Hill near Kennford, less than 10 miles south of the city, Exeter Racecourse is about level with where the River Exe becomes tidal. Originally known as Haldon Racecourse and later Devon & Exeter, the track has the highest altitude of any horse racing venue in England. Some claim it is the oldest course in the country, but that’s disputed.
Exeter Racecourse is around 10 miles north-northeast of another Devon track, Newton Abbot. Little used when a lull in National Hunt racing occurred during some parts of the Victorian era, it soon became popular again. Now owned by The Jockey Club, Exeter races today are the most important along the south coast. There’s only jumps horse races on here with no Flat meetings over the summer.
The biggest of all races at Exeter today is the Haldon Gold Cup, a Grade 2 limited handicap chase over almost two-and-a-quarter miles. This takes place in early November during the early part of the core National Hunt season. As we shall see, most of the key Exeter Racecourse events are steeplechases rather than hurdle races.
The Jockey Club Racecourses
Exeter is just one of 14 racecourses owned by The Jockey Club in the UK today. These are all scattered throughout England. Exeter Racecourse is the southern and westernmost, but there are also tracks as far and wide as Cumbria in the northwest and on the Cambridgeshire-Suffolk border to the east. Learn more about every track:
Configuration of Exeter Races Today
A right-handed and undulating oval-shaped track, a complete circuit of Exeter Racecourse is about two miles round. This puts a real emphasis on stamina with the home straight and beyond an uphill climb. That ends after turning down the back. The track thus suits strong galloping types and thus quite different from Kempton Park, another right-handed venue owned by The Jockey Club.
All fences on the steeplechase course are on the outside of the track, so they are the stands’ side after coming around the home bend but also furthest away in the back straight. There are 11 in total to cross on a complete circuit of Exeter races today. Three come after the winning post, with the first a water jump and the last atop the hill an open ditch.
There are four more fences down the back straight. The third of these is another open ditch for horses to clear. After turning for home, there’s a line of four plain fences and a shorter run-in to the line than on the hurdles course. In the Exeter Racecourse showpiece, the Haldon Gold Cup, there are dozen jumps in all. A three-mile chase starts in the back straight and all fences save the water are taken twice in the Devon National.
In a hurdle race, meanwhile, there are seven fights on a complete circuit of the track. There is no two-mile start as this would more or less be the winning post, but there is a cross hurdle on the climb to the highest part of the course, then three down the back and as many again up the home straight.
