Ruby Walsh Cheltenham Gold Cup 2024: 16/1 Alternative To Galopin Des Champs
As the 2024 Cheltenham Festival looms, top former jockey Ruby Walsh, who rode 59 winners at the meeting, is starting to churn out his best bets and fancies for the four day meeting – with the latest an each-way Cheltenham Gold Cup alternative to Galopin Des Champs.
Ruby has gone on record as saying that Galopin Des Champs is his idea of the most-likely Gold Cup winner – no prizes here.
The Paddy Power pundit was super-impressed with the way he bounced back in the Savills Chase over Christmas and last time when beating main Gold Cup rival in the betting Fastorslow in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown.
Ruby Told His Paddy Power Blog Readers.
“Galopin Des Champs is very honest and does recover well from his races. Even looking at him after Christmas, you’re thinking ‘wow, what a performance,’ but to look at him on New Year’s Eve, he didn’t look like he’d had a run, or you couldn’t see it in him. He didn’t look light or tucked up – the strength was still there.”
“He’s able to recover from his races and I suppose that’s the same with humans as well as with horses. Some players can play in every match and others can’t.”
Adding “I couldn’t contemplate taking on Galopin Des Champs – simple as.”
However, Ruby Walsh does have an each-way alternative Cheltenham Gold Cup over Galopin Des Champs for those that are looking for a bit more value.
Step forward – CORACH RAMBLER.
Last year’s Grand National winner hasn’t quite built on his big day in the Aintree sun – flopping on this return at Kelso and then a well-beaten third in the Betfair Chase to Royale Pagaille and Bravemansgame at Haydock.
But Ruby feels the Lucinda Russell horse is set to run a big race in the Gold Cup at a venue and a meeting we know he loves.
The 10 year-old has won the last two runnings of the Ultima Handicap Chase (watch below) and a return to Prestbury Park could just spark the Aintree hero back to life.
With Ruby Walsh Saying
“He is not everybody’s price (Galopin Des Champs) so as an each-way play I’d be fully with last season’s Aintree Grand National winner, Corach Rambler.”
“I could see him coming home the best of the field as horses get in the mix early and plenty fade from the home turn. Corach Rambler’s proven stamina could see him picking off plenty to run into the money.”
He’s also been freshened up for the Festival with 111 days off, but he won last year’s Ultima off a 108-day absence. Therefore, this is not a big worry.
If you want to get involved, you can bet on Corach Rambler with Paddy Power, who are also non-runner, no bet on the race.
