The Fighting Fifth Hurdle betting market has a very one-sided feel to it in 2023 as the superstar hurdler Constitution Hill is making up a massive 85% of the market. Can any horse end the Nicky Henderson-trained 6 year-old’s unbeaten hurdles record?
Bookmakers Give Constitution Hill An 85.7% Chance Of Winning Saturday’s 2023 Fighting Fifth Hurdle
Saturday’s Grade 1 BetMGM Fighting Fifth Hurdle is all about one horse – if the betting is to be believed.
Only five horses are entered for the Newcastle Grade 1 contest but all the focus will be on one horse – Constitution Hill.
The Nicky Henderson-trained 6 year-old is yet to taste defeat from seven runs over hurdles. While in the process has also banked over ÂŁ600k – you can see Constitution Hill’s full prize money breakdown here.
Horse racing fans last saw Constitution Hill in action when winning the Aintree Hurdle over 2m4f. Which was his first try beyond 2m 1/2f.
Prior to that he’d won the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and earlier that season the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton. With his first run last term also coming in Saturday’s Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle.
Constitution Hill Taking Same Route As Last Season
There was also talk of Constitution Hill being switched to chasing this year. However, these were quickly kicked into touch, and it seems owner Michael Buckley and trainer Nicky Henderson are mapping out the same route as last season.
On Saturday, he’ll take on just four other runners in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle and with the best UK horse racing betting sites making him as short as 1/6. This means they are giving him an 85.7% chance of winning.
The Harry Fry-trained Love Envoi is the closest to him in the betting at 5/1 but is officially rated 22lbs inferior to Constitution Hill.
You Wear It Well, Not So Sleepy and Benson make up the five Newcastle runners. This trio are certainly no slouches on their day – howerver, are all taking on the best 2m hurdler in the UK and Ireland at the moment.
And the betting suggests it’s going to be Constitution Hill first and the rest fighting for places.
Last Year Constitution Hill Won The Fighting Fifth Hurdle By 12 Lengths
12 months ago, Constitution Hill dotted up in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle – winning by a staggering 12 lengths. This romp included having the 2020 Champion Hurdle winner Epatante, who is also trained by Nicky Henderson, back in the silver medal slot (watch below).
Constitution Hill was sent off as the hot 1/4 favourite that day. But the shortest price he’s been for a race so far was in the Aintree Hurdle (2/15) last time out.
