Frankie Dettori Shergar Cup Rides 2023: Five Mounts For The Pocket Italian
Frankie Dettori and the Shergar Cup go hand-in-hand, but this Saturday’s Ascot meeting will be the final swansong for the popular Italian jockey at the fixture.
Dettori will be retiring at the end of this year, so the 2023 Shergar Cup – a meeting he’s captained the winning team four times in the past, will be his last.
Frankie will again be the boss of the European side and ride with Bauyrzhan Murzabayev and Olivier Peslier to take on The Girls, who are captained by Hayley Turner, Great Britain & Ireland (Luke Morris) and the Rest Of The World (Vincent Ho).
Jockeys will compete over six races and gain points for their teams based on where they finish in the race.

The first Frankie Dettori Shergar Cup ride this Saturday is on this James Evans runner Dream Composer – a horse that often runs well at Ascot being a past course and distance winner. Has also won twice this year (Goodwood and Newmarket) but is still racing off a 3lb higher mark than the last of those successes. Any rain would also help, as his last three wins came with some degree of ‘soft’ in the going description, while this will be the first time Frankie’s ridden the horse.

Looks one of the best chances on the afternoon for Dettori in this stayers’ race over 2m. Versatile horse as often seen over the sticks as well, but often never too far away in these decent handicaps on the flat. Last seen running down the field in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle and earlier this season was a neck second in the Chester Cup back in May.
Only a pound higher here on that Chester run and also stays further having been beaten just 3 1/4 lengths in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal Meeting two runs ago. Frankie also knows the horse well, having ridden him twice before, including when 4th in last season’s Cesarewitch Handicap at HQ.

Won this race last year and looks to have a great chance of backing up that success again. Is the reserve in 11, but there is already one non-runner so will be fine getting into the race. Lightly-raced this season, with just three runs and the last of those should have him spot-on for this when running third at Ripon off a 3-month break. Won this prize 12 months ago off this same mark of 92 as well for the William Haggas yard and Frankie rides the horse for the first time.

3:20: Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile (Handicap) Cl2 (4yo+ 0-105) 1m ITV4: EMPIRESTATEOFMIND @ 6/1 with BetUK
Fair handicap miler but his last win now came in 2022 – which was nine races ago. Last seen not beaten far here at Ascot at the end of July (1 3/4) and is also down a pound for that effort. However, the John Quinn yard are in tip-top form at the moment with a 42% strike-rate (at the time of writing) which is a big plus. Looks to have a solid each-way chance if backing up that recent course run. Frankie will ride for the first time.
4:30: Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint (Handicap) Cl2 (3yo 0-100) 6f ITV4: BONNY ANGEL @ 16/1 with BetUK
Filly from the Clive Cox yard that has won two of her 10 starts. Ran down the field at Glorious Goodwood 11 days ago over 6f but is dropped another 2lbs for that. Also ran the classy Shaquille to 6 1/2 lengths in a Newmarket Handicap in May and the form of that has been given a big boost with the winner going onto win the Group One July Cup. Taking on some in-form sorts, like Quinault, but can be expected to have improved for that last run and not without an each-way squeak based on his Newmarket form earlier this year.
