Royal Ascot Results On Friday 23rd June 2023: Double Delight For Dettori
Fresh from his Gold Cup win on Thursday ‘Frankie Fever’ was still fizzing around the Ascot track on Friday and the pocket Italian didn’t disappoint with a top win in the opener – the Albany Stakes. He came with a well-timed late run to get the Donnacha Aidan O’Brien-trained Porta Fortuna (5/1) home by a length – a win that was not only Frankie’s second Albany winner, but it also gave him a landmark 80 overall wins at Royal Ascot.

Frankie Dettori had to then wait until the Sandringham Stakes at 5pm to move his Royal Ascot tally beyond 80 as Coppice (6/1 jfav) landed this 1m handicap for the Italian. It was Dettori’s 8th win in the race and also provided trainer John Gosden with his third win in the race – all Frankie-ridden too!
Frankie will now head into the final day on Saturday on 81 overall Royal Ascot wins.
Bookies Brimming After Bear Fails To Roar In Commonwealth Cup
Little Big Bear was the first of the big day three Royal Ascot bankers – going off odds on at 10/11 for the Group One Commonwealth Cup, but despite having plenty in-hand at the official ratings, the O’Brien hot-pot floundered to a 1 1/4 length defeat to the Julie Camacho-trained Shaquille (9/1), who ran a remarkable race after rearing up at the start.
Moore Lands Fifth Winner Of The Meeting For Joseph O’Brien
In a bid to not have Frankie Dettori grab all the headlines, Ryan Moore was back in the winners’ enclosure in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at 3:40pm on Okita Soushi (9/1). The 5 year-old got the better of a tussle in the straight with HMS President but came out best at the line by a neck and this moved Moore onto 78 winners overall at Royal Ascot.
Tahiyra Collects In Coronation Stakes
The Dermot Weld yard were the next to strike in the Coronation Stakes – the second of the Group One races on the day. Tahiyra (8/13), this year’s Irish 1000 Guineas winner, travelled well through the race and once jockey Chris Hayes pressed the button with a few furlongs to go there was only ever going to be one winner.
She holds engagements in the Pretty Polly Stakes and Irish Oaks – both at the Curragh later in the year.
King Of Steel Boosts The Epsom Derby Form
Next up was the race that’s dubbed the ‘Ascot Derby’ – the King Edward VII Stakes – and so it was fitting that one of this year’s Epsom Derby big players King Of Steel (10/11) was to win the race. Jockey Kevin Stott, who is making a big name for himself this season, rode the Derby second more patiently this time and once this big son of Wootton Bassett got going he picked of his rivals one-by-one to win going away by an easy 3 1/2 lengths.
He’s got an entry in the Irish Derby on July 2nd and also the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes back here at Ascot on July 29th. He looks a very exciting prospect for the Roger Varian camp.
Rhythm N Hooves Lands Final Day Four Race For Hollie Doyle
The curtain came down on day four at Royal Ascot on Friday with the Archie Watson-trained Rhythm N Hooves (12/1) storming home under Hollie Doyle to deny Kerdos in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes. The win gave Doyle her second win at the meeting after taking the King’s Stand Stakes on Tuesday and also meant the last two winners of this race were ridden by the girls with Hayley Turner winning 12 months ago.
