Royal Ascot Results for Thursday 22nd June 2023: The King and Frankie Dominate The Gold Cup Day Headlines

The day three Royal Ascot action started with a shocker of a result with a monster 150/1 winner of the Norfolk Stakes when Valiant Force won for trainer Adrian Murray and with 50/1 shot Malc taking silver, this led to a huge ÂŁ3,478.24 straight forecast.

King Charles III Wins His First Royal Ascot Win – A Race Named After His Great Grandad

It’s been no secret that King Charles III doesn’t exactly share the same passion for horse racing as his mother did, but he inherited the late Queen’s horses and has so-far honoured her Royal Ascot engagements.

The first few days probably didn’t help on that score either with his opening three runners at the meeting all unplaced.

However, the King’s Royal Ascot luck changed on Thursday when the William Haggas-trained Desert Hero (18/1) came with a late run to win the King George V Stakes – a race named after the King’s Great Grandad.

The win provided both Haggas and jockey Tom Marquand with their first successes in this Royal Ascot race, but the Queen was no stranger to winning the prize – she won it back in 1955 with a horse called Jardiniere.

With 24 Royal Ascot wins for the Queen, King Charles III still has a long way to go to get on terms with his mum, but hopefully today’s win by Desert Crown has sparked his horse racing passion into life – we’ll see!

Frankie Dettori Wins Ninth Ascot Gold Cup On Courage Mon Ami

The King had the day three headlines for only 1 hour and 15 minutes though as it was left for some more Ascot royalty – Frankie Dettori – to back up his ‘king status’ at his favourite meeting.

As we all know, Dettori is hanging up his riding boots at the end of this season, so this was always going to be his final Royal Ascot – a meeting that he’d ridden 77 winners at before Tuesday.

He added to that tally with Gregory winning the Queen’s Vase on Wednesday, but the Gold Cup – a race Frankie’s won 8 times – was the one he wanted in this swansong season.

He didn’t disappoint either – of course he didn’t, this is Frankie Dettori the guy that writes his own headlines and if he doesn’t get another winner all week he won’t care.

The horse that created history for Dettori was Courage Mon Ami, trained by his old pal John Gosden, who had already provided Frankie with three past Gold Cup wins (Stradivarius).

This lightly raced 4 year-old came with a late run to overpower the favourite Coltrane in the final furlong, to win by 3/4 of a length at the line and returning a tasty 15/2 for Frankie backers.

However, despite this haul of now 9 Ascot Gold Cups, Frankie is still two short of the mighty Lester Piggott on 11 – maybe the pocket Italian will do a retirement u-turn to catch up his old friend’s record – here’s hoping!

Hayley ‘Turns’ On The Girl Power

On the day, the other headlines were grabbed by Hayley Turner after coming with a late run on Docklands (6/1) to win the Britannia Stakes for trainer Harry Eustace.

Epsom Derby sixth Waipiro (7/1) landed the Hampton Court Stakes to boost that Classic form, while Ryan Moore was on the scoresheet too with Warm Heart (13/2) winning the Ribblesdale after hot favourite Al Asifah ran flat in 6th.

The final race was left for another of the older jockeys still riding to win as 43 year-old Jamie Spencer steered home the Richard Hannon-trained Witch Hunter to win the Buckingham Palace Stakes at a massive 50/1.
