Scottish Grand National Tips For Ayr Race (Saturday 22nd April 23)
Who Will Be The 2023 Scottish Grand National Favourite?
Kitty’s Light and Monbeg Genius are expected to be fighting it out for the Scottish Grand National favourites berth this weekend and it’s easy to see why.
Monbeg Genius was third behind a certain Corach Rambler last time out at the Cheltenham Festival and as we all know the form of that run has since been given a big shot in the arm with Rambler winning last weekend’s Aintree Grand National.
Then, Kitty’s Light will head here with plenty of backers too – he was runner up in the race last season and is back off a 3lb lower mark and also represents last year’s winning yard of Christian Williams. He stays all day and impressed when landing the Eider Chase last time at Newcastle.
Just Two Winning 7 Year-olds Since 1993
However, there is a hefty Scottish Grand National trend that both the 7 year-olds Kitty’s Light and Monbeg Genius will need to overcome. Since 1993, the race has only produced two winning 7 year-olds, with a massive 17 of the last 19 winners aged 8 or older.
This would also be a negative for the Lucinda Russell-trained Your Own Story, plus Undersupervision, Malina Girl and Famous Bridge – who are all 7 or younger.
Four Scottish Grand National Tips To Have On Your Radar
So, if we are to be believed that the key Scottish Grand National age trend will follow on this year then this will help rule out several.
It’s also interesting that 13 of the last 19 winners carried 10st 9lbs or less, while 89% of the last 19 winners finished in the top 6 last time out.
Taking these trends into account, there are four Scottish Grand National runners of interest.
FLASH COLLONGES: @ 11/1
Trainer Paul Nicholls has won the Scottish Grand National three times over the years. The first coming back in 1997 with Belmont King, with Vicente winning the pot in ‘back-to-back’ years in 2016 and 2016. Nicholls has two this year – Threeunderthrufive and FLASH COLLONGES – and it’s the last-named that catches the eye.
This 8 year-old gets in here with just 10st 8lbs to carry and looks an improving staying chaser, who has won 4 of this 12 overall starts. Yes, he might lack a bit of experience but in contrast has scope to improve more too.
His first run over fences came last time at Newbury too, so that experience will be a plus and he’s only up 4lbs for it. The longer trip is an unknown but did it well over 3m the last day to suggest he’s well worth a crack over 4m. Harry Cobden riding is the final plus.
MANOTHEPEOPLE @ 11/1
The Fergal O’Brien yard had a good time of it at Aintree last week and their runner MANOTHEPEOPLE looks to hold a decent chance too. This 8 year-old heads here having won four of his last five races and should be better for his recent run at Newbury after 4 months off.
That run came carrying 11st 9lbs too, but gets in here with just 10st 4lbs and will have the experienced Paddy Brennan, who won this race in 2009, in the saddle.
MAGNA SAM @ 20/1
This 9 year-old could be another that is over-priced after winning well at Musselburgh in early February over just shy of 4m.
The form of that run was franked in this week too, with the runner-up Captain Cattistock winning at Cheltenham. MAGNA SAM is up 8lbs for that win but has been freshened up by having 2 1/2 months off and is a horse that goes well off a break. Alex Edwards, who won on him last time, keeps the ride.
MIGHTY THUNDER @ 20/1
Trainer Lucinda Russell will be looking for a famous ‘National Double’ and even though their other runner Your Own Story might be the more popular in the betting, but MIGHTY THUNDER looks the better value and is also a past winner of this race.
He took the spoils in 2021 and despite not winning a race since has slipped to a 19lb lower mark. He won the Scottish Grand National off a rating of 144 and is now off 128. He also carries just 10st 2lbs in weight and there was a sign last time, when 5th at Kelso, that he could be running back into form. He might be worth chancing in a race we know he’s acted well in before.
