Trainer Willie Mullins won the Grand National in 2005 with Hedgehunter – his sole win in the world’s greatest horse race – but Templegate feels he’s got a leading chance of adding to that on Saturday.
Mullins runs four, including Mr Incredible, Capodanno and Recite A Prayer, but it’s his recent Cheltenham Festival winner – GAILLARD DU MESNIL – that is his main Grand National tip.
This 7 year-old grey is not the quickest, but that doesn’t matter in the National – it’s run over 4m 2 1/2f!
Staying is his game and that’s exactly what he’ll get on Saturday. He’s got a bit of class too – having run in the top three in all 9 chase starts (2 wins) and was deemed good enough to run at Grade One level this season too.
At just 7 years-old he’s got more to come too and last year Noble Yeats proven that the younger horse can take the Merseyside Marathon.
Templegate Grand National Tips: The Main Dangers
Last year’s third, Delta Work, is another to fear according to Templegate. He’s got a lower weight than last year and heads here in form as another Cheltenham Festival winner.
Noble Yeats – the defending champ, who was a fine fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last time, is also respected.
