Aintree Horse Racing Tips for Day 2 Of The Grand National Festival: Friday 14th April 2023
Day 2 of the 2023 Grand National Festival gets going at 1.45pm with the Mildmay Novices’ Chase, where all eyes will be on Gerri Colmbe to see if he can make amends for his narrow defeat at the Cheltenham Festival. There are four Grade One races on the 7-race card, but it’s the Topham Chase at 4.05pm that often grabs a lot of the headlines over the Grand National fences.
You can also see the Aintree trends for the main day two races on Friday.
Aintree Horse Racing Tips For The Grand National Festival: 1-2-3 Best Bets on Day 2 (Friday 14th April 23)
1:45pm The Mildmay Novices’ Steeple Chase (Class 1) Grade 1 3m 1f
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 AINTREE TIPS: GERRI COLOMBE is taken to get back to winning ways after a close second in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last time. This Gordon Elliott runner staged on well, but just failed to get up, so the slightly longer trip will suit here. Bronn, was back in third that day and can go well again too, with the Paul Nicholls Complete Unknown the one for third.
- GERRI COLOMBE
- BRONN
- COMPLETE UNKNOWN
2.20pm The William Hill Handicap Hurdle Premier Handicap (Class 1) Grade 3 2m 4f ITV
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 AINTREE TIPS: FENNOR CROSS was down the field the last day in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Didn’t jump well that day, but the better ground here is expected to suit this time and it was hard to fault his two wins at Cheltenham prior to last time. The JP McManus entries No Ordinary Joe and Camprond will have their backers, while two other Irish runners Captain Conby and Buddy One also look to have decent chances in what looks a very open affair.
- FENNOR CROSS (e/w)
- CAPTAIN CONBY
- BUDDY ONE
2.55pm The Top Novices’ Hurdle (Class 1) Grade 1 2m ½f ITV
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 AINTREE TIPS: The Gordon Elliott-trained FOUND A FIFTY is sure to be a popular pick here having been a close second to the useful Corbetts Cross the last day. Before that he’d won well at Fairyhouse and with just two career runs will have a lot more to come. Inthepocket was a fine 4th in the Supreme and brings decent form to the table too, while the Harry Fry runner Altobelli has done little wrong in winning all three starts.
- FOUND A FIFTY
- INTHEPOCKET
- ALTOBELLI
3.30pm The Marsh Steeple Chase (Registered as the Melling) (Grade 1) 2m 4f ITV
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 AINTREE TIPS: FAKIR D’OUDAIRIES has won the last two runnings of this race and at the age of just 8 looks worth sticking with. He bypassed the Cheltenham Festival with this race in mind and does seem to save his best for this time of the year and the Liverpool track. French Dynamite for Rachael Blackmore can go well too, while the second top-rated in the field is Pic D’Orhy, who was second to Shishkin in the Ascot Chase last time out. The form of that run has since been franked with Shishkin winning Thursday’s Aintree Bowl Chase.
- FAKIR D’OUDAIRIES
- FRENCH DYNAMITE
- PIC D’ORHY

4.05pm The Randox Supports Race Against Dementia Topham Chase (Premier Handicap) 2m 5f ITV
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 AINTREE TIPS: It’s hard to knock the record in this race of the Peter Bowen yard. They won the pot last year and also in 5 times now since 2007. This 9 year-old also comes here having won 5 of his last 6 races, with EQUUS DANCER’S only blot coming when not staying 3m two runs ago at Sandown. This season’s Grand Sefton Chase winner Al Dancer has proven experience over these Grand National fences, as does Burrows Saint, who was 4th in the 2021 Grand National.
- EQUUS DANCER
- AL DANCER
- BURROWS SAINT
4.40pm The Cavani Menswear Sefton Novices’ Hurdle (Class 1) Grade 1 3m ½f ITV
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 AINTREE TIPS: ABSOLUTE NOTION was a close second to the useful Good Land at Leopardstown last time out at the Dublin Racing Festival. This Gordon Elliott runner has been kept fresh by missing the Cheltenham Festival and with only 4 career runs should have more to come. Recent Cheltenham winners Iroko and Stay Away Fay has obvious claims too and should not be far away either.
- ABSOLUTE NOTION
- IROKO
- STAY AWAY FAY
5.15pm The Abersoch Land and Sea Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) (Conditional & Amateur Jockeys) 2m ½f
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 AINTREE TIPS: GO DANTE will have the services of Jamie Codd here – who is arguably the best jockey in this amateur/conditionals riders’ race. This Olly Murphy runner was a good winner at Wetherby last time out too and it’s also interesting connections reach for the first-time cheekpieces. Nibiru from the shrewd Tony Martin yard was a fine second to the useful Gaelic Warrior last time at Leopardstown and can go close too, with a chance taken on Densworth, who has won his last two.
- GO DANTE
- NIBIRU
- DENSWORTH
