57 Horses Remain in Contention For The 2023 Grand National After Latest Forfeit Stage

The latest forfeit stage for the 2023 Grand National has seen 57 horses stand their ground as the build-up to the Saturday 15th April race continues.

We saw the 73 runners whittle down to 57 – with 16 horses scratched and therefore, some of the horses that were previous numbered 41+, are now in the race proper.

A Maximum Of 40 Runners Will Head to Post on Saturday 15th April

We are not there yet though. The 57 remaining horses will still come down further between now and the big day on Saturday 15th April, with a maximum 40 runners allowed.

The cut-off mark of 40 Grand National runners has been in place for many years now and is capped here for safety reasons.

16 Horses Scratched Include Hewick, Conflated and Threeunderthrufive

You can see below the 16 horses that were the latest to fall by the wayside and won’t be etching their name into the Grand National record books this year.

Amongst the names taken out were the current Becher Chase winner Ashtown Lad and last year’s Irish Grand National winner Lord Lariat. While the 2021 fifth Farclas also won’t be back for more – nor will the Jamie Snowden-trained GA Law.

Good News For Some Though

The connections of those horses previous numbered 41+ were celebrating though as with several runners ahead of them coming out – this means they have moved up the pecking order.

It was good news for one of the Grand National greys in the race – Eva’s Oskar, who is now sitting in the final number 40 berth, while the Willie Mullins-trained Mr Incredible, who had been outside the magic 40 is now number 32.

Our Power, from the Sam Thomas yard, is the horse that now sits in the dreaded 41 slot – but you feel that he should still be okay, needing just one horse ahead of him to drop out.

Noble Yeats Still on Track To Defend His National Title

The 2022 Grand National winner, Noble Yeats, remains on target to defend his crown. Last year, the Emmet Mullins runner became the first 7 year-old to win the National since 1940 and he’s all set to return to the scene of his famous victory.

He’ll be looking to join the likes of Tiger Roll and Red Rum as ‘back-to-back’ Grand National winners, but this year he’s rated a massive 19lbs higher and will have to lump round 11st 11lbs.

Twelve months ago Noble Yeats only had 10st 10lbs.

Corach Rambler The Current 2023 Grand National Favourite

The horse that is attracting all the interest at this stage though is the Lucinda Russell runner Corach Rambler. This 9 will was last seen coming late on the scene to win the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and many feel with just 10st 5lbs he’s well-in.

He’s a course winner over fences at Aintree too, when winning a Novice Handicap Chase there last October. He’ll be looking to give trainer Lucinda Russell their second Grand National win after winning the big prize in 2017 with One For Arthur.

The negative ahead of Corach Rambler’s chance though is that he’s a hold-up performer so might be prone to some traffic issues with fallers. While believe it, or not, Cheltenham Festival winners don’t have a great record in the National.

Only 3 horses that won at Cheltenham that same season have landed the National since 1961.
