How Did This Cheltenham Festival Ante-post Bet Play Out?

GALVIN:

First up was this former Gordon Elliot runner, that was backed at 20/1. On the day, the horse was running in the NH Chase on the opening day and after impressing earlier that season was sent off just 7/2. The horse relished the stamina test over 3m 6f – one of the longest Festival races – to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Galvin went onto run 4th in the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

SIR GERHARD:

Was a popular pick for the Weatherbys Champion Bumper in 2021 after winning both previous runs. Backed at 16/1 in this ante-post bet but was sent off just 85/40. The horse was switched to the Willie Mullins yard (from Elliott) just before the race and got the job done by 1/2 a length. Beating another Willie Mullins Cheltenham runner Kilcruit into second. Since that win, Sir Gerhard also won the 2022 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at the Festival and is entered in four races in 2023 – including the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase @ 9/2 with BetUK.

QUILIXOIS:

Irish runner that was quickly making a name for himself with four straight wins before the Cheltenham Festival. This run of wins saw his price for Friday’s Triumph Hurdle shorten into 2/1. A lot lower than the 20/1 this punter locked in earlier in the season. Under Rachel Blackmore, the 4 year-old was always going easily and eventually won by an easy 3 1/4 lengths. However, the good news for this punter, the horse hasn’t won a race since.

MINELLA INDO:

With all three previous picks landed, this ante-post bet was sweating on Minellla Indo in the 2021 Gold Cup. Luckily for him the horse seems to love Cheltenham and that proved the case here again. He’d already won the 2019 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle and been runner-up in the 2020 RSA. Sent off at 9/1 – a bit shorter than the Cheltenham odds of 14/1 this punter secured. But during the race he managed to see off the two-time Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo and A Plus Tard. Minella Indo is back for more in the 2022 Cheltenham Gold where he’s @ 16/1 with BetUK.
