The tale of the first leg

The first leg saw Newcastle scrape a 1-0 win over the Saints at St Mary’s which means that they will hold a slender advantage when Southampton travel up north for the second leg.

The only goal to separate the sides on the south coast last week came from Joelinton, as the Brazilian smashed Aleksander Isak’s drilled cross in from close range to give the Magpies an advantage going into the second leg.

In a close game with only one goal separating the sides there was also a red card shown to Southampton defender Duje Ćaleta-Car who picked up a second yellow late in the game to reduce the Saints to 10-men. Ćaleta-Car has already served his suspension from the first match however and will be available for selection tonight.
