Winter Derby Trends 2024: Put Past History On Your Side

See below the main Winter Derby trends from the last 21 runnings – but don’t forget the race will be run at Southwell for the first time, with Lingfield having staged the race since 1998. The race is also now run over an extra furlong.

However, you can still use our stats to find the best profile based on past winners of the race.

For example, it’s a prize trainer John Gosden loves to target – having won four of the last five. While the favourites have a solid 43% strike-rate in the last 21 runnings.

  • 17/21 – Aged 6 or younger
  • 17/21 – Priced 8/1 or shorter

Winter Derby Tips: Lord North To Continue Fine Gosden Record

The Winter Derby was first run back in 1998 and over that time had been staged at Lingfield Park – until now.

This Group Three all-weather race has been switched to Southwell this year due to some changes in the British horse racing fixture list and has now also been handed a ‘Premier Fixture’ status.

Just six Winter Derby runners will head to post in search of the £56k first prize, but two of those are past winners – Lord North and Forest Of Dean.

The last-named won the race in 2021, while LORD NORTH won the pot easily 12 months ago (watch below) and despite now being aged 8 is the clear one to beat again.

This John Gosden-trained classy middle distance performer has won over £6.3m in total prize money and even though he’s now been out for almost a year is a horse that goes well fresh.

Connections wouldn’t be keeping him in training if age was showing signs of catching up on him and he won the Winter Derby last year off a 238-day absence too.

Lord North Can Become The First ‘Back-to-Back’ Winter Derby Winner

Overall, Lord North has won 50% of his 20 career runs and he’s taken to become the first EVER back-to-back winner of the Winter Derby.

Last year he had Tyrrhenian Sea 3 1/4 lengths back in second and despite the Godolphin runner Military Order looking a threat, the official ratings still tell us Lord North has 11lbs in-hand and only has to give away a pound.

He’s taken to provide trainer John Gosden with his fifth win in the race, having won four of the last five.
