Manchester City won the Super Cup against Seville on penalties (after drawing 1-1 in normal time), which continued their remarkable run of NOT conceding 2+ goals in a game now since January 2023.
Man City Are 34 Games (and counting) Without Conceded More Than A Goal-A-Game
Seville could only manage one goal against Manchester City in the 2023 Super Cup this week – but they shouldn’t be too disappointed as they’ve joined a long list of sides that can’t seem to bag 2 (or more) goals by Pep Guardiola’s men at the moment.
Of course, in normal time – before you shout Seville (Super Cup) or Arsenal (Community Shield) on penalties.
City went onto win the Super Cup on penalties to add this trophy to their Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League haul from last season, but this latest game in Athens extended the ‘not letting in more than a-goal-a match’ Blue Moon record to a staggering 34 games.
The last time a team fired two goals by Man City (in all competitions) was back in January 2023 – but who were the side?
Spurs Were The Last Team To Score Two Goals Against Man City
Step forward Tottenham Hotspur, who might be famed for not winning a trophy since lifting the 2008 League Cup, but great news Lilywhite fans – you do currently hold a Premier League record.
Spurs were the last side to score 2+ goals against City.
This achievement has not been bettered by any side since and many have tried – in fact, 27 different teams.
The two strikes from the North London club came in a remarkable Premier League game on January 19th, when Spurs actually netted the first two goals of the game.
Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson were the Tottenham players to take them 2-0 up into half-time.
However, after what was probably a rousing team talk by Pep at the break, City came out the traps on fire in the second period to score four goals and win the game comfortably 4-2 in the end (watch below).
Newcastle Will Be The Latest Team To Try And End Man City’s Run
Next up for City is a home Premier League match on Saturday (8pm) against Newcastle – so can the Magpies end this 34-match run without a team scoring 2 (or more) against City?
The good news for Toon fans is they fired in 4 goals in their opening weekend win over Villa. However, the bad news is Newcastle haven’t had the best of times when facing Man City in recent years.
In fact, City have lost only ONE of their last 31 (yes, 31) games against Newcastle.
That said, if you do feel this goal run can end then why not back Newcastle to score 2+ goals @ 9/4 with BetUK.
