Who is Valentin Barco? Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion may have just pulled off one of the finest signings of the 2024 January transfer window.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side look to have added another impressive string to their bow with the capture of the highly-rated South American wonderkid.

In recent times, the Seagulls have nurtured and developed the careers of Ecuador’s Moises Caicedo, Argentina’s Alexis Mac Allister and Paraguay’s Julio Enciso.

Who Is Valentin Barco?

Valentin Barco is a 19-year old Argentine U23 international who plays predominantly as a left-back. Born in 2004, Barco started his career at Sportivo Las Parejas before he was signed by Boca Juniors when he was nine.

In 2021, Barco made his senior debut for the club and would go on to make 35 appearances across all competitions, netting one goal and providing four assists.

South American football expert, Nathan Joyes, believes that Barco will be the next big star to emerge from Argentina. He has also likened Barco’s attacking qualities to Liverpool‘s Trent Alexander-Arnold. Which in itself is a huge compliment.

Barco’s versatility down the left – where he can play as a left midfielder and left winger – will be a huge bonus to Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi. The Seagulls tend to play attacking football and Barco should adapt easily to their style.

Valentin Barco FM24 Wonderkid

Football Manager enthusiasts will more than likely be aware of the talent that is Valentin Barco. The 2024 version of the award-winning game rates Barco as the best left-sided wonderkid users can sign.

Barco has a projected rating of 87 and can play in four different positions. When Brighton acquired him in January 2024, they used a simulation of the game to announce his arrival (watch the clip above).

Of course, not every player the game predicts to go on to be a world-class superstar actually does so. In reality however, the Seagulls have carved out a brilliant reputation for unearthing hidden gems and selling them on for huge profits.

If, and its a big if, Barco does go on to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, more credit will fall on the management and scouts at the AMEX Stadium.

Brighton’s Fixtures

At the time of writing, it’s too early to say when Valentin Barco will make his debut for Brighton. With that in mind, however, the FA Cup 4th round clash against Premier League strugglers Sheffield United could provide the perfect opportunity.

The Seagulls are next in league action against Luton Town before they entertain rivals Crystal Palace on home soil. Trips to Tottenham and the Blades come after that before they play Everton at the end of February.

From Barco’s perspective, they are a good batch of fixtures to potentially be afforded some valuable minutes as he embarks on his new journey in England’s elite division.

Who knows, if Barco does make the right impression and fits into manager Roberto De Zerbi’s style of play, he could reach the dizzy heights that FM24 has predicted for the Argentine wonderkid.
