The career Grand Slam in golf stands as the ultimate pinnacle of the sport. We examine those who belong to this exclusive winners club, and those who are on the brink of attaining this prestigious achievement.

While every golfer aspires to win a major tournament, only a handful have achieved victory in all four prestigious events: the Masters, PGA Championship, US Open, and the Open Championship.

Several golfing legends have attempted and come near to achieving this milestone, yet the group of players who have accomplished it has remained unchanged for over two decades.

Players Who Have Won A Career Grand Slam in Golf

Among the select few who have accomplished the career grand slam are Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, both of whom boast a combined total of over 30 major titles, solidifying their positions at the top of this prestigious list.

Completing the esteemed group are Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Gene Sarazen, who, alongside Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, stand as the exclusive individuals to have secured victory in all four major championships.

Tiger Woods

Widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time, Woods completed his career Grand Slam by winning the 2000 Open. Impressively, he has dominated all four majors enough times to achieve three career Grand Slams.

Jack Nicklaus

Jack Nicklaus secured the career Grand Slam on three separate occasions, with his initial win occurring at the 1966 Open. Notably, he fell short of achieving a fourth career Grand Slam by just one more victory in the Open Championship before retiring.

Gene Sarazen

Sarazen’s illustrious career saw him clinch seven majors, and he wrote his name in history as the first player to secure the modern-era career Grand Slam with his triumph at the Masters in 1935. However, this remarkable feat was a gradual journey, spanning 13 years from his initial major win in 1922.

Gary Player

In a remarkable career, Gary Player claimed nine major titles, beginning with his victory in the 1959 Open Championship. Six years later, he sealed his career Grand Slam with a win at the 1965 US Open.

Ben Hogan

In 1953, Ben Hogan secured victories in The Masters, US Open, and The Open, completing three out of the four majors. However, due to scheduling conflicts with the PGA Championship, he couldn’t compete in all four tournaments in the same year. Fortunately, Hogan had previously won the PGA Championship in 1946, thus solidifying his career Grand Slam.

Will Rory McIlroy Become The Sixth Career Grand Slam Winner?

As the Masters approaches, commencing on Thursday, April 11th, Rory McIlroy stands on the brink of golf immortality, potentially becoming the first man since 2000 to achieve a career Grand Slam.

The Northern Irish golfer needs just one more triumph, the prestigious green jacket at the Masters, to complete his set of all four major titles.

Despite securing top-10 finishes in seven out of the last 10 years at Augusta National, McIlroy hasn’t been a serious contender for the trophy since his close second-place finish in 2022. His last notable contention was in 2018, when he played alongside eventual champion Patrick Reed.

Nonetheless, he is considered one of the favourites this year as he prepares for his 16th shot at winning the Green Jacket at the Masters and his 10th endeavour to complete the career Grand Slam.
