Going into the international break, it’s Tottenham who sit top of the table after they beat Luton 1-0 with only 10-men on the field. You might think it’s a rare sight seeing Tottenham at the top, but the last time it happened wasn’t too long ago.
Tottenham were under Jose Mourinho and sitting at the top of the Premier League with just 9 days to go before Christmas on 16th December 2020.
They travelled to Merseyside to play Liverpool in front of a crowd capacity of just 2,000 (Covid times). Liverpool and Tottenham were both on 25 points going into this game with Spurs at the top with a better goal difference.
Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool but Heung-Min Son quickly levelled the score. It looked it was going to be Tottenham at the top after this clash with the game drawing to a close but Roberto Firmino met a corner with a bullet header to knock Tottenham off the top.
Tottenham went on to sack Mourinho just four months later and before they met Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final. Man City were 1-0 winners in that game.
Mourinho now manages Roma and Tottenham are league leaders once more under new manager Ange Postecoglou.
