What Grey Horses Are Running in The 2023 Grand National at Aintree?
Grand National horse racing punters seem to latch onto the grey horses in the race year-after-year, but there is a small word of caution – as there have only ever been four grey winners of the Grand National since the race was first run in 1839.
12 months ago, we saw the Charlie Longsdon-trained Snow Leopardess well-backed into 10/1, but the grey mare was eventually pulled-up.
So, will it finally be another ‘grey day’ for the bookies in 2023? Let’s look at the possible grey horses that could be in action in this year’s Grand National.
2023 Grand National Grey Horses Running
There are five potential grey horses running in the 2023 Grand National – but the final runners will be out on Thursday 13th April.
You can back any of the horses below with the best UK horse racing betting sites here.
Gaillard Du Mesnil @ 14/1
Willie Mullins runner. This 7 year-old grey was also seen winning the NH Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, where he stayed on well over 3m6f to indicate the longer Grand National distance will be right up his street. Was also third in the 2022 Irish Grand National so no stranger to these stamina-sapping events.
Vanillier @ 22/1
Irish runner that hails from the Gavin Cromwell yard and gets in here with a featherweight (10-6). Was last seen running a very close second to the useful Kemboy in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse, which can often be a decent pointer race to the National.
Coko Beach @ 25/1
This grey was 8th in the Grand National last year and is returning for more another year older (8) and now rated 5lbs higher. Hails from the Gordon Elliott team that have three National wins under their belt and is also owned by Gigginstown House Stud, who have won the National three times since 2016.
Eva’s Oskar @ 33/1
Currently number 54 on the National list of runner so needs 14 horses ahead of him to come out. Tim Vaughan-trained grey would have a squeak if making the cut, having run a fine 4th in the Eider Chase last time at Newcastle over 4m 1 1/2f. The 9 year-old would also carry just 10-1 in weight.

Last Grey Horse to Win The Grand National Was Neptune Collonges in 2012
A horse called The Lamb will always have the tag as being the first ever Grand National grey winner. He won the race in 1868 and actually did the double when winning again in 1871.
It was a 90-year wait till the next grey horse won the National – Nicolaus Silver in 1961.
While the latest grey horse to land the greatest horse race on the planet was the Paul Nicholls-trained Neptune Collonges in 2012 (watch below). The 11 year-old only just got up by a nose in a tight finish. It was his last ever race too and remains the only winner for the Paul Nicholls yard to date.
