Welsh Grand National Trends and Stats 2023
We’ve showcased the best Chepstow horse racing trends below to apply to the final Welsh Grand National runners. These will help you narrow down the field and give you a better chance of putting history on your side.
Recent Run: A Run In The Last 7 Weeks Is A Must-Have
Coming into the Welsh Grand National having had a run within the last two months is essential – if the trends are to believed. This is backed up with ALL of the last 21 winners having raced in the last seven weeks.
Last year’s winner, The Two Amigos was last in action on 30th November before, winning the Welsh National 27 days later.
Form: A Top-Four Finish Last Time Is A Plus
The nest Welsh Grand National trends to have onside is a ‘top four’ finish last time out. A massive 90% of the last 21 winners came into the race having recorded a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th in their most recent run.
Another stat last year’s winner ticked having run third at Haydock previously.
Age: Respect Horses Aged 9 Or Younger
The Two Amigos win the Welsh National last year aged 10, but really the trends tell us to look for horses aged 9 or younger.
This is supported with 18 of the last 21 (86%) of winning fitting this age range. While we can take it further with 71% of the last 21 winners aged 8 or younger.
Weight: Make 11st or Less Your Cut-Off
Being a handicap then weight carried is the next trend to look for as a massive 85% of the last 21 winners lumping 11st or less to victory.
We can also narrow down the search if you want to apply the 71% stat that’s seen winners carry just 10st 8lbs or less.
Market: The Betting Often A Good Guide
For a race with 15+ runners in that is most of the time very competitive, punters are often not far off the mark in the Welsh National.
The average winning SP in the last 21 years is just 9/1, while 67% of the last 21 winners also retrurned 10/1 or shorter.
Track Experience: Winning Form At Chepstow A Bonus
Having form and Chepstow is next and with that winning form. This is backed up with 11 of the last 21 winners (52%) being past winners at the Welsh track at some point in the past.
While 33% of the last 21 winners actually ran at Chepstow last time out, so this is worth remembering. Oh and the same number had also contested the Welsh National in the past.
Favourites: Just Four Winning Market Leaders Since 2002
Since 2002 the Welsh National has produced just four winning favourites. This, however, still works out at a 19% strike-rate. 13 of the last 21 market leaders were placed too (62%), so it you want a safety-net then betting on the favourite each-way could be the way to go (if the price allows).
Trainers: Respect Twiston-Davies, Nicholls, O’Neill and Anyone Called Williams
Finally, there are a few Welsh Grand National trainers to look out for in a race that many different yards have won in reecnt times. Paul Nicholls, Nigel Twiston-Davies and Jonjo O’Neill have all won the race twice.
While a fun trainer stat is look for ANYONE called Williams. In recent years Venetia Williams has landed two, Christian Williams and Evan Williams one each.
It might also pay to note any horses ridden by a claiming jockey – since 2018, we’ve had three winners with jockeys riding with a claim.
