Super Survivor The New Market Leader For Welsh National

Jamie Snowdon’s Super Survivor leads the market now as the Welsh Grand National favourite after Thursday saw Monbeg Genius not included in the entries.

Jonjo O’Neill’s seven-year-old was popular in the ante post betting but will now not go to Chepstow after sustaining a recent injury setback.

Super Survivor loves a run around Chepstow and his last win was at this meeting last year but has certainly not been disgraced in his two runs since. He was second behind Git Maker on reappearance at Lingfield last month and he should come on for that performance.

The lightly-raced seven-year-old has been campaigned for this big staying chase and looks to have a real good chance of taking his career to new heights. Snowdon’s charge is yet to finish out of the top three in seven races under rules so far and should not be taken lightly here.

Iwilldoit silks1. Iwilldoit

  • Age: 10
  • Rating: 153
  • Weight: 12-0
  • Jockey: Dylan Johnston
  • Trainer: Sam Thomas
  • Form: 1-1-1-5-2
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 8/1

Winner of this contest in 2021 and Sam Thomas’ charge is apparently “ready” for the race and looks to go well after a solid 2nd at Aintree on his reappearance in November.

2. Complete Unknown

Complete Unknown silks

  • Age: 7
  • Rating: 153
  • Weight: 11-13
  • Jockey: Harry Cobden
  • Trainer: Paul Nicholls
  • Form: 1-2-1-2-1-0
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 8/1

Solid since switching to chasing with three wins from six runs and whilst he finished 10th of 20 behind Datsalrightgino in the Coral Gold Cup when seen last, he was only beaten 24 lengths. It would not be surprising to see the Paul Nicholls-trained horse be heavily involved.

3. The Big Breakaway

Eric Jones Geoff Nicholas John Roman silks

  • Age: 8
  • Rating: 147
  • Weight: 11-8
  • Jockey: unknown
  • Trainer: Joe Tizzard
  • Form: 0-5-0-0-2-2
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 12/1

Whilst The Big Breakaway’s form doesn’t read too nicely, he was second in this contest last year behind The Two Amigos and there’s a good chance that Joe Tizzard has been eyeing a winning return in the race. He’s on a lower mark now and this gutsy eight-year-old will surely be in the mix.

4. The Galloping Bear Adrian Paterson silks

  • Age: 10
  • Rating: 145
  • Weight: 11-6
  • Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies
  • Trainer: Ben Clarke
  • Form: 1-0-3-0-2-0
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 20/1

The Galloping Bear is yet to be seen this season, but had Wind Surgery in July for a second time. He last raced in the Midlands Grand National in March and was pulled up, so connections will be hoping for a big run on reappearance and this 10-year-old typically goes well when fresh.

5. Nassalam

  • Age: 6
  • Rating: 145
  • Weight: 11-6
  • Jockey: Caoilin Quinn
  • Trainer: Gary Moore
  • Form: 6-3-0-7-4-1
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 6/1

Won his fourth race over fences just a couple of weeks ago at Chepstow, when storming home in the Welsh Grand National trial so is familiar with the track and can go nicely for the in-form Gary Moore yard.

6. Chambard

  • Age: 11
  • Rating: 144
  • Weight: 11-5
  • Jockey: Lucy Turner
  • Trainer: Venetia Williams
  • Form: 0-0-4-4-2-1
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 10/1

Yard having a top season so far and this popular 11-year-old won his first race in roughly 18 months when winning the Becher Chase at Aintree earlier on this month. Chambard is certainly one with a solid chance and it would be unfair to rule him out despite being almost 12, and seemingly in good form.

7. Iron Bridge

  • Age: 7
  • Rating: 142
  • Weight: 11-3
  • Jockey: unknown
  • Trainer: Jonjo O’Neill
  • Form: 1-5-0-2-2-0
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 10/1

Iron Bridge is the only chance that the O’Neills will have of winning this race now after Monbeg Genius was ruled out. Steps up to over 3m for the first time and only run at this track before was a disappointment and others appeal more.

8. Truckers Lodge

Truckers Lodge silks

  • Age: 11
  • Rating: 141
  • Weight: 11-2
  • Jockey: Freddie Gingell
  • Trainer: Paul Nicholls
  • Form: 4-5-8-1-0-1
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 12/1

Truckers Lodge was fourth in the Welsh Grand National last year and has picked up two wins in his last three races. Took home the London National earlier on in December and was going very well the race before that at Cheltenham, but got brought down and badly hampered. One of two from the Nicholls yard in the race and the horse goes to Chepstow in good form.

9. Only The Bold

  • Age: 8
  • Rating: 135
  • Weight: 10-10
  • Jockey: unkown
  • Trainer: David Pipe
  • Form: 2-1-1-4-8-0
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 33/1

Made a good start to life under David Pipe when winning his first two races for tjhe yard. However, since his wind surgery in August it has not helped in any way. Was pulled up behind The Imposter when seen last and well beaten on his seasonal reappearance last month at Newbury.

10. Autonomous CloudMcNeill family silks

  • Age: 7
  • Rating: 134
  • Weight: 10-9
  • Jockey: Paddy Brennan
  • Trainer: Fergal O’Brien
  • Form: 2-2-2-2-1-1
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 9/2

Fergal O’Brien’s charge is one of the more fancied Welsh Grand National runners and he heads into the contest in solid nick. The stable are also operating at a very handy 27% strike rate so he could be a type worth having on your side after making a winning seasonal debut at Uttoxeter last month.

11. Iceo Madrik

  • Age: 5
  • Rating: 130
  • Weight: 10-5
  • Jockey: unknown
  • Trainer: David Pipe
  • Form: 0-0-2-0-0-9
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 80/1

David Pipe has a few entries in this one and Iceo Madrik is unlikely to go close given his form this year. He was pulled up at Cheltenham and Newton Abbot in the spring and then had wind surgery over the summer. He returned to action at big odds at Newbury earlier on this month after 237 days off the track, finishing a never close 9th. One thing to note is that he does have heavy ground form in France so conditions could suit.

12. Super Survivor

  • Age: 7
  • Rating: 130
  • Weight: 10-5
  • Jockey: Gavin Sheehan
  • Trainer: Jamie Snowden
  • Form: 2-1-2-1-3-2
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 9/2

Super Survivor looks to be the one to beat from the Jamie Snowden yard. He seems to enjoy the Chepstow track and may just get his first win since last year’s renewal of this meeting. He should be involved under one of Britain’s most in-form jockeys in Gavin Sheehan. A slight concern may be the record of favourites in this race as it is one that often brings big surprises, but it could pay to stick with him.

13. Amateur

  • Age: 10
  • Rating: 126
  • Weight: 10-1
  • Jockey: Connor Brace
  • Trainer: John Flint
  • Form: 0-6-0-3-1-0
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 40/1

Amateur has been quite an inconsistent sort this year and hasn’t been seen since July, and with a poor record after big lay offs he may find this one too tough first time out this winter.

14. Charlie Uberalles

  • Age: 7
  • Rating: 126
  • Weight: 10-1
  • Jockey: unknown
  • Trainer: Dianne Sayer
  • Form: 2-1-4-4-1-3
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 33/1

Dianne Sayer’s charge has decent form figures but has only ran once since September 2022, and returned to action at Kelso last month with a fair 3rd after 416 days off. Despite the big price, this horse could certainly be involved considering his good staying record. He has also not ran on ground worse than good to soft since his point-to-point days in 2020, so that could be an issue with testing conditions expected.

15. Wayfinder

  • Age: 9
  • Rating: 125
  • Weight: 10-0
  • Jockey: unknown
  • Trainer: Rebecca Curtis
  • Form: 0-4-0-3-0-2
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 20/1

Rebecca Curtis’ gelding finished second behind Nassalam in the Welsh Grand National Trial earlier on this month and is a course specialist. He won four races at Chepstow between 2020 and 2022 so knows the track very well. He could build on that solid performance last time out and is one to watch in the betting leading up to the day, with any more market support a positive.

16. Blade Runner

  • Age: 7
  • Rating: 124
  • Weight: 9-13
  • Jockey: Rex Dingle
  • Trainer: Chris Gordon
  • Form: 1-3-3-1-1-0
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 33/1

Blade Runner has been running well so far this season and started the campaign with two good wins including one at Chepstow. With a record of 1 run 1 win at the Welsh track he should give this a good try. This is much deeper waters than anything faced before but there’s still scope for more at the age of just seven.

17. Max Dynamo

  • Age: 13
  • Rating: 120
  • Weight: 9-9
  • Jockey: unknown
  • Trainer: Emma-Jane Bishop
  • Form: 3-0-1-6-0-2
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 66/1

This 13-year-old is coming to the end of his career and this could be one of his final races, and as much as it would be a fairytale ending it would be a huge shock. At 66/1 he may be worth a couple of quid each way as he does have winning form at Chepstow – and he his last win came at the track over 3m2f. Max Dynamo is a veteran now and could have more wits about him than many in the field and he’s a trier.

18. Domaine De L’Isle

  • Age: 10
  • Rating: 119
  • Weight: 9-9
  • Jockey: unknown
  • Trainer: Sean Curran
  • Form: 6-8-1-4-0-0
  • Welsh Grand National Odds:c 66/1

Domaine De L’Isle’s last win came over course and distance here in March, but he’s shown nothing since and may be past his best days now at 10 and is unlikely to have a say in this one.

19. Didero Vallis

  • Age: 10
  • Rating: 115
  • Weight: 9-4
  • Jockey: unknown
  • Trainer: Venetia Williams
  • Form: 5-5-0-0-3-9
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 28/1

Another entry for the Venetia Williams yard, but not one of the more favoured ones. Didero Vallis has been running on the Cross Country track at Cheltenham the last twice so may be prepped for this one. He finished third behind Foxy Jacks on his seasonal reappearance with some handy types behind him, so is another runner at big odds worth having a second look at.

20. Not Sure

Will Roseff silks

  • Age: 7
  • Rating: 115
  • Weight: 9-4
  • Jockey: unknown
  • Trainer: Kerry Lee
  • Form: 1-3-1-3-1-3
  • Welsh Grand National Odds: 40/1

The form of Not Sure from the Kerry Lee yard reads fairy well but this huge step up in class may just be too much to handle. However, low in the weights he can give his a good effort. He seems versatile ground wise, but has never raced over further than 3m so he may be vulnerable.

That completes our Welsh Grand National runners guide ahead of the big Chepstow race.
