Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Best Winners Since 2000
It’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe day at Longchamp this Sunday, with a maximum field of 20 runners heading to post for Europe’s richest turf race. So, to get you in the mood, we take a look at five of the best Arc winners since 2000.
1. SINNDAR (2000)
Trainer: John Oxx
Jockey: Johnny Murtagh
Provided jockey Johnny Murtagh with his only Arc winner during his career. Won the race as a 3 year-old after also winning the Epsom Derby that same season. Only raced 8 times during his career, but won 7 of those races, while his Arc win of 2000 was actually his last ever run.
2. DYLAN THOMAS (2007)
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
Jockey: Kieren Fallon
Supplied trainer Aidan O’Brien with his first Arc winner in 2007, but was jockey Kieren Fallon’s second success in the race having already landed the prize in 2005 on Hurricane Run. Dylan Thomas won the race as a 4 year-old, beating Youmzain by a head under a powerful ride from Fallon. He won 50% of his 20 races, including the Irish Derby in 2006. He landed 6 Group Ones during his career, but after winning the Arc failed to win again from 3 runs before being retired to stud.
3. SEA THE STARS (2009)
Trainer: John Oxx
Jockey: Michael Kinane
Was last seen on the track winning the Arc on 2009, which capped-off an amazing (but short) career. He won 8 of his 9 career races and was another Arc winner that also landed the Epsom Derby that same season. Ended with 6 Group One races and provided jockey Mick Kinane with his second Arc winner after taking the race in 1999 with Montjeu.
4. GOLDEN HORN (2015)
Trainer: John Godsen
Jockey: Frankie Dettori
You guessed it, another Arc winner that took the Epsom Derby that season, but was also putting jockey Frankie Dettori back on the ‘Arc Map’ after 13 years since his last win in the race (Marienbard, 2002). Went onto race just once more when second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf that same season, but managed to end his career with 7 wins from 9 races (4 Group One Races). Retired to Dalham Stud, where he still stands
5. ENABLE (2018)
Trainer: John Gosden
Jockey: Frankie Dettori
Classy mare that won the Arc in back-to-back years between 2018 and 2017. The second of those came as a 4 year-old in 2018 when she had to knuckle down to see off Sea Of Class by a short-neck. She went onto finish second in the 2019 Arc so was denied a famous treble, but after her 2018 success went onto win 6 more times. In total, she won a remarkable 15 of her 19 career races and won over £10.5 million in total prize money. Her 2018 win also gave Frankie Dettori his sixth Arc win and trainer John Gosden his third.
