The assistant referee who incorrectly flagged Luis Diaz as offside in the well documented Tottenham vs Liverpool clash last weekend, has been assigned to the Championship for this Saturday.

Tottenham vs Liverpool Linesman Demoted

Adrian Holmes, who was responsible for running the line for Tottenham vs Liverpool last Saturday, has been demoted to Championship duties this weekend.

Holmes adjudged Luis Diaz to be offside, as the Colombian ran behind Tottenham’s defence to slot home what should have been the opening goal.

The controversy surrounding the decision of course stems from VAR’s mishap in the events immediately after Holmes’ flag, where a miscommunication between the video operators and the actual on-field decision allowed play to continue at 0-0.

Simon Long, who was the opposite assistant referee for Tottenham vs Liverpool, will join Holmes at the Den on Saturday afternoon to officiate Millwall’s clash with Hull City in the Championship.

Both Long and Holmes belong to the Select Group One, which is the very highest level of refereeing and are responsible for officiating top-flight fixtures.

It is also worth mentioning that Holmes typically referees in the Premier League, with 41 appearances in England’s top division over the past two seasons, compared with just three in the Championship.

Fellow colleagues Darren England and Dan Cook, who served as the chief VAR operators at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend, have already been removed from their expected duties for the coming gameweek.

The former was also set to feature in Leicester’s meeting against Preston in midweek, but the EFL have also removed him amid the intense conversation surrounding VAR.
