SportsLens Head of News Lee Astley commented on the odds, saying: “It was a dark weekend for Premier League officials.

“Almost all of the attention has been firmly fixed on Luis Diaz’s incorrectly disallowed goal against Tottenham, but it is easy to forget they also missed clear penalty decisions in some of gameweek seven’s other fixtures – namely Matt Turner’s calamitous swipe on Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.

“No team has come out with as strong a retort as Liverpool up to this point, which may signal enough is finally enough.

“Whatever options Liverpool are exploring remain unknown, but legal action appears the most likely (4/1). That goal could mean the difference between European qualification, or perhaps even points in the title race; the economic and emotional consequences of those action simply can not be underestimated.

“At this moment in time, officials are, by all accounts, fairly untouchable. They are handed an inconsequential slap on the wrist and allowed to continue as normal in a couple of week’s time.

“A ‘two strikes and you’re out’ system may force them to buck up their ideas, and until officials are threatened with the possibility of being sacked altogether (3/1), they will be allowed to operate with the same incompetence that has marred the league in recent years.”
