Tony Calvin Tips On Saturday 30th December 2023
2:25 Newbury: Coral Racing Club Mandarin Handicap Chase Cl3 (4yo+ 0-135) 3m2f ITV4: SHANTY ALLEY
Shanty Alley was second in this Newbury race last year – beaten only 3/4 of a length and that day also had Laskalin 5 1/2 lengths back in third. The good news is that he gets in here off a 5lb lower mark than 12 months ago and should be spot-on for this after a fair return run at Catterick last month.
He’s also been shouldering 12st+ in his last three outings so the higher graded race here means he gets in with just 10-13 to carry this time. Calvin expects the horse to have come on bundles for that first run of the season and in a race with many chances we know he’s run well in this contest in the past to suggest he’s value at around a double-figure price with the best betting sites.
3:35 Newbury: Coral Get Closer To The Action Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl3 (5yo+ 0-140) 2m6½f ITV4: HENRY’S FRIEND
Tony Calvin feels the Ben Pauling-trained Henry’s Friend did well on his chasing debut at Doncaster earlier this month, on what was his first run back form a wind op and is worth suppoting on Saturday. He jumped well there and can only get better in that department, while Calvin also thinks the horse wasn’t give to hard a time to come home 5th that day.
The longer trip is expected to suit and with that run also coming off a 245-day break and the aforementioned wind op, then fitness will only be at a higher level this time. He’s also been dropped 2lbs from that last run at Doncaster, while should Newbury get any more rain so softer ground would be fine having run well in it in the past.
