Aston Villa travel to Newcastle this Saturday in the 5:30pm Premier League offering and the interesting fact about this clash is the last time the Midlands club beat the Magpies on the road there was a famous brawl – between TWO toon players – oh, and also three RED CARDS.

Villa Last Beat Newcastle Away In 2005 When Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer Had A Tear-Up

The slightly older Premier League football fans out might remember the famous on-pitch brawl between Newcastle’s Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer, when the toon midfielders turned on each other in the 82nd minute (watch below).

At the time Newcastle were 3-0 down and with frustrations boiling over Bowyer and Dyer starting brawling away from the play – with both players swinging punches and Bowyer’s shirt ripped to shreds.

The players were also remarkable pulled apart by Villa legend Gareth Barry and then both given their marching orders by the day’s referee Barry Knight in the 82nd minute.

These double reds also came off the back of another Newcastle player – Steven Taylor – having already been sent off 9 minutes earlier (73rd).

Strikes from Juan Pablo Angel and two from the peacekeeper Gareth Barry secured this 3-0 Villa away win that will always be remembered for an in-house fight rather than a Barry brace.

The sides will meet again on Saturday 12th August (5:30pm) in their opening fixtures in the new 2023/24 Premier League season – referee Andy Madley will be hoping for a calmer match.

Lee Bowyer: Not Proud About the Incident But “Winning Is Everything To Me”

Speaking to TalkSport’s Jim White and Simon Jordan a while ago, Lee Bowyer reveals all about the incident. Saying “he hates losing and winning is everything”.

Dyer NOT Passing the Ball To Bowyer The Main Reason For The Scrap

While Bowyer also alludes to the fact that earlier in the match there were many times he felt Dyer could have passed the ball to him having been in decent scoring positions.

With this allegedly happening several times during the game and with Newcastle finding themselves 3-0 down, Bowyer finally came to blows with Dyer over the ‘non-passing’ and the rest is history.

This 3-0 Away Win In 2005 Remains The Last Time Villa Beat Newcastle On The Road

Newcastle and Villa meet again this Saturday in the 5:30pm Premier League game and this famous incident is sure to be reeled out once more by the TV pundits.

However, Newcastle have clearly put the escapade behind them over the years and since that 2005 ‘Bowyer/Dyer’ match they’ve remained unbeaten every time Villa have come to St James’ Park.

Last season this repeat clash ended 4-0 thanks to a brace from Callum Wilson and the closest Villa have come to wins have been five 1-1 draws over that period.

Hopefully we won’t see another Newcastle player – Kieran (Trippier) – having a brawl with a teammate.
