Templegate Horse Racing Tips Today at Ascot (Sat, 21st Oct 2023)

1:15 – Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup (Group 2) (British Champions Series) Cl1 (3yo+) 2m ITV: KYPRIOS 11/8

2022 Ascot Gold Cup winner who has been off for much of the season with injury. Returned last month to run second in the Irish St Leger (beaten favourite), but with that being his first run in 344 days can be forgiven. Likely to face a stern test from the 3-time winner of the race, Trueshan, but Templegate expects this top-class Aidan O’Brien stayer to get back to winning ways today.

1:50 – Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) Cl1 (3yo+) 6f ITV: KINROSS (nb) 13/8

Won this race last year under Frankie Dettori and is expected to be hard to beat as he defends his title. This Ralph Beckett sprinter is the clear top-rated in the field, a past CD winner and also a horse that acts on any ground, so the softer conditions today will be fine. It could be Frankie ‘flying dismount’ time after this one.

2:25 – Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m4f ITV: RUE BOISSONADE  9/1

French raider that has been well supported in the build-up to the race, probably due to her being a heavy ground winner in her homeland. Last seen running a fair 4th in the Group One Prix de Royallieu at Longchamp over 1m6f, so the drop back in trip here in these conditions looks a good move. Has still also only had six runs so looks a filly with more to come.

3:05 – Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Sponsored By Qipco) (Group 1) (British Champions Mile) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m ITV: PADDINGTON 9/4

Been a winning machine this season with top successes in the Irish 2000 Guineas, Coral-Eclipse, Sussex Stakes and here at Ascot in the St James’s Palace Stakes at the Royal Meeting in June. That winning run ended in the Juddmonte International at York last time, when a beaten odds on favourite, but the Templegate tips suggest the drop back to a mile today and a 2-month break to freshen up will see him get back in the winners’ enclosure and give his trainer his fifth win in the race.

3:45 – Qipco Champion Stakes (British Champions Middle Distance) (Group 1) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m2f ITV: BAY BRIDGE (NAP) 11/2

Another past winner that is back today and after a solid 6th in the Arc last time at Longchamp is primed to run a big race – according to the Sun’s Templegate tips today. Has done the bulk of his running on quicker ground, but this Stoute runner has fared okay in very soft conditions and won on ‘good-to-soft’ to suggest he’ll be fine. We also know he stays further than this 1m2f trip, which will be a big asset in the ground. He’ll be looking to become the first back-to-back winner of the Champion Stakes since Cracksman in 2017 and 2018.

4:25 – Balmoral Handicap (Sponsored By Qipco) Cl2 (3yo+) 1m ITV: MIGRATION 10/1

Tough handicap to end the card but it’s the David Menuisier-trained 7 year-old that Templegate is pinning his hopes on in the ‘lucky last’. Last seen running at Group Three level, when down the field to former Epsom Derby winner Adayar, but before that was a nice handicap winner at Doncaster. Therefore, the ease back into this level is a plus, despite being 6lbs higher than that success. Will carry top-weight of 10-1 as a result, but that because he’s the top-rated horse in the line-up, plus we know he loves soft and heavy ground, which he’ll get today.
