Former Newcastle United defender Stuart Pearce has caused a stir by boldly tipping the Magpies to win the Premier League.

In recent years, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have dominated the competition, clinching five titles in six seasons. Liverpool briefly interrupted City’s dominance in the 2019-20 season.

Arsenal narrowly missed the title last season, finishing second with 84 points, trailing Manchester City’s 89. Many fans and pundits have touted Arsenal and Liverpool as contenders, but Pearce has faith in former club Newcastle.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Pearce stated, “I predicted Newcastle to win the league at the start of the season and I’m still sticking by that. I don’t think Man City will win the league. Losing Kevin De Bruyne [to injury] for the length of time they did at the start of the season is one of the main reasons.

“Make no mistake, whoever finishes above them will win win the league, because they will still be in the top two. I just think this year, after what they achieved last year, that they will drop a little bit.

“I’m not judging it on the last two defeats, that is irrelevant to me. When De Bruyne is not in the team, Erling Haaland loses something.

“Listen, they are a brilliant team and they will be right up there but I think with Arsenal and Liverpool, they have tougher challenges there, and I think Newcastle will go on a run.”

He also suggested that Tottenham’s chances hinge on Son Heung-min and James Maddison’s availability, despite their impressive start.

Currently, Newcastle sit eighth in the league table, with 13 points from eight games. They trail joint-leaders Tottenham and Arsenal by seven points. Title favourites Manchester City and Liverpool make up the other top four places, whilst Aston Villa sit in fifth.

Bookmakers have Pearce’s former club priced at around 40/1 to win the Premier League.
