Savills Chase Trends and Stats 2023

We’ve showcased the best Leopardstown horse racing trends below to apply to the final Savills Chase runners. These will help you narrow down the field and give you a better chance of putting history on your side.

Recent Run: A Run In The Last 8 Weeks Is A Must-Have

With 82% of the last 22 Savills Chase winners having raced in the last eight weeks then this is a good place to start. Most will tick this stat, but the one that doesn’t is the 2020 winner of the race A Plus Tard, who was last seen 259-days ago.

Form: A Top-Three Finish Last Time Is A Plus

Next up is to look for a top three finish last time out, as a massive 91% of the last 22 winners fitted the bill here. Of the main players – Galopin Des Champs and Gerri Colombe – they are all fine here. However, Capadanno and Churchstonewarrior fall down.

27% of the last 22 winners also won last time out, which turned on

Age: Respect Horses Aged 8 Or Younger

The best Savills Chase age to look for is 8 or younger. This trend has applied to 20 of the last 22 winners (91%) and puts a line through a fair few. These include the 9 year-olds and past winners in A Plus Tard and Conflated. While Appreciate It is also aged 9.

Since 1999, there have only been two Savills Chase winners aged 9 or older – Beef Or Salmon (2005) and Tidal Bay (2012).

7 and 8 year-olds have had the best records – winning 12 of the last 22, which is a plus for the main pair Galopin Des Champs and Gerri Colombe who are all aged 7.

The only 8 year-old of the Savills Chase runners 2023 is Churchstonewarrior.

Market: The Betting Often A Good Guide

With 21 of the last 22 Savills Chase winners returning 8/1 or shorter, then we don’t often see a shock in this race. This bodes well for the main three again – being the only ones at this stage priced 8/1 or less in the betting.

Favourites: Market Leaders Have A Good Record

In the last 10 runnings we’ve seen three winning favourites – Bobs Worth (jfav), Don Poli (fav) and Conflated (fav), while over the last 22 renewals the jolly has won 32%. We’ve also seen 64% of the last 22 market leaders placed.

This year’s Savills Chase favourite will be either Galopin Des Champs or Gerri Colombe with the pair very close in the betting.

Trainers: Gordon Elliott Has The Best Recent Record

It’s quite surprising that trainer Willie Mullins has only won the Savills Chase twice. These wins came with Kemboy (2018) and Don Poli (2015). He’ll be trying to improve this record with Galopin Des Champs as his main hope, but also has I Am Maximus, Capodanno and Appreciate It.

However, the best trainer in recent times is Gordon Elliott with four wins and these have all come from 2016. Outlander (2016), Delta Work (2019), Galvin (2021) and Conflated (2022) are the winners for the County Meath handler.

Elliott has last year’s winner Conflated back for more and also Gerri Colombe – giving him another strong hand.

The winning-most Savills Chase trainer is Michael Hourigan with five wins – three coming with Beef Of Salmon – meaning Elliott needs just one more to equal him.

Savills Chase Trends Tip

Of the main two Galopin Des Champs has a better course record – being 3-from-3 there over fences and yet to lose a race. While Gerri Colombe will be having his first run at Leopardstown.

However, the jury out on how much the Gold Cup win has taken out of Galopin Des Champs, then the call is GERRI COLOMBE.

Yes, this will be his first run at the track, but there is no reason to suggest it won’t suit. We can expect him to be staying on powerfully as normal and being aged 7 and from the Gordon Elliott yard, that have a top record in this race, he ticks a lot of boxes.

Of the rest, last year’s winner Conflated often saves his best for Leopardstown and looks worth a saver as the current champ. While the Irish National winner I Am Maximus could also outrun his odds having won his last two over fences and looks to be getting the hang of things over the bigger obstacles.

Best Bet: GERRI COLOMBE
Best Outsiders: Conflated & I Am Maximus
