The Savills Chase 2023 runners ahead of Thursday’s big Grade One Chase sees a star-studded cast heading to Leopardstown that includes the current Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs, plus Gerri Colombe and Fastorslow.

Savills Chase 2023: Galopin Des Champs and Gerri Colombe Go Head-to-Head

We’ve eleven runners entered for the 2023 Savills Chase at Leopardstown on Thursday, which is four more than last year.

The focus will be on the first two in the betting – Galopin Des Champs and Gerri Colombe. While add in last year’s winner Conflated, plus former Gold Cup hero A Plus Tard, then horse racing fans are in for a crackerjack of a renewal.

Galopin Des Champs will be trying to give trainer Willie Mullins only his third win in the race and heads the betting with the best UK horse racing sites, despite being turned over in his last two outings.

With Gerri Colombe, who bypassed the King George VI Chase at Kempton to run here too to set up a must-see race.

Savills Chase Runners 2023: 11 Horses Entered For Leopardstown

Galopin Des Champs:

The current Cheltenham Gold Cup winner (watch below) heads the betting with most of the best online gambling sites. However, is on a recovery mission after losing his last two races, including last time out when third to Fastorslow in the John Durkan. With some asking if his Gold Cup win has left a mark? Would be looking to become only the third Savills Chase winner for trainer Willie Mullins, with his past winners Kemboy (2018) and Don Poli (2015). Is the top-rated in the field (178) and is 3-from-3 over fences at Leopardstown.

Gerri Colombe:

Connections decided to head to the Savills Chase instead of running in the King George at Kempton, where he’d been favourite for the race earlier this month. The ground was the concern at Kempton as Gerri Colombe needs it softer, which he’ll get here. Has won five of his six chase starts and returned this season with a win in the Champion Chase at Down Royal. Getting up late to deny Envoi Allen by a neck (watch below). Has never raced at Leopardstown, but hails from the powerful Gordon Elliott yard, who have won this race four times since 2016.

Fastorslow (NON-RUNNER)

Has beaten Galopin Des Champs in his last two races but is still a bigger price than the Mullins horse. Last seen winning the John Durkan Chase at Punchestown at the end of November when beating Appreciate It by 1/2 a length (watch below). Negative would be that each time he’s raced at Leopardstown he’s been well beaten, so does the track suit? Would be looking to give trainer Martin Brassil his first win in the Savills Chase.

A Plus Tard:

Former Gold Cup winner and also the 2020 winner of this race that is back from a 256-day break. Is the second-highest rated in the field (172) and a close second in this race to Galvin in 2021. Overall form at Leopardstown reads 1-1-2. However, another on a recovery mission after not winning since taking the Gold Cup in 2022, including being pulled up in the Blue Riband event this year and finishing well back in the Aintree Bowl Chase back in April.

Envoi Allen (NON-RUNNER)

2023 Ryanair Chase hero, 2020 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle winner and also won the 2019 Champion Bumper – making him a three-time Cheltenham Festival winner. However, has lost his last three races, including when well beaten in the Punchestown Gold Cup in April. Last seen getting chinned on the line in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal by Gerri Colombe, but the bonus for his backers is he’s never lost at Leopardstown (2-from-2).

Conflated:

Last year’s Savills Chase winner and will be looking to become the first back-to-back winner since Beef Or Salmon in 2004 and 2005. Was a close third in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal last time out but hasn’t won a race since taking this 12 months ago and that success is his only win in his last eight. The big positive is that he seems to like Leopardstown – winning his last two at the track. Plus is another from the Elliott yard that have a top record in the race.

Appreciate It:

Former Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner at the Cheltenham Festival (2021), but since switching to fences has only won twice from seven. That said ran a blinder in the John Durkan Chase last time at Punchestown on his first run for 215-days, going down just 1/2 a length to Fastorslow. The longer trip here is the worry, with all his career wins under rules coming over shorter. Is 4-from-5 at Leopardstown.

I Am Maximus:

Last season’s Irish Grand National winner, so we know staying the trip will be fine. Could be the value call at a big price as defied the odds to win the Drinmore Novices’ Chase last time at Fairyhouse. As at just 7 years-old should have more improvement in the locker. Has raced at Leopardstown twice and been beaten both times but comes into the race having won his last two races. Which is something only Gerri Colombe and Fastorslow can also boast about.

Capadanno:

Pulled up in the Grand National at Aintree in April and last seen running last of six in a Listed Chase at Thurles. Has also won only one of his last seven and is rated a full 20lbs inferior to Galopin Des Champs.

Janidil: (NON-RUNNER)

Chased home Allaho the last day at Clonmel but was beaten 9 lengths that day. A winner of three of his 15 career chase starts but has only recorded one of those in his last eleven.

Churchstonewarrior:

Unseated in the Florida Pearl at Punchestown last time out and is the lowest-rated in the field (148). Which means he’s got 30lbs to find with Galopin Des Champs. Would be a huge Christmas shock if he’s good enough.
