The Saudi Pro League is projected to be amongst the top ten in football within the next couple of years at their current rate of spend following a wave of high-profile arrivals this summer.

According to TeamForm‘s rankings, the Saudi Pro League currently sits at number 68 in the world despite some of football’s best talent making their way over to the Middle East.

The likes of League One, the Scottish Premiership and the MLS are all currently ranked higher. If the Saudi Pro League continues its current rate of spend and grows even bigger, we could see it break into the top ten within a few years.

TeamForm rank the tenth-best football league in the world as Mexico’s Liga MX, whose best player is Sergio Canales – market value of €15m – so it’s just about distributing quality at a more balanced rate for the Saudi Pro League to climb higher.

The elite players remain small fishes in a big pond however with a stark contrast in quality to the average squad player, but that’s to be expected in a league spending big bucks to attract the best of the best so more will follow.

We have seen a number of the world’s best footballers buy into the Saudi project following Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to join Al-Nassr at the end of 2022, stating he had already won everything in Europe and it was time for a new challenge.

To name a few: Neymar, Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Neves, Edouard Mendy, Marcelo Brozovic, Jota, Roberto Firmino, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Alex Telles, Malcom, Jordan Henderson, Riyad Mahrez, Allan Saint-Maximin, Fabinho, Sadio Mane and Franck Kessie.

Bernardo Silva has also been linked with a move to Al-Hilal and Steven Gerrard became the head coach of Al-Ettifaq after being sacked by Aston Villa and will look to revive his managerial career there before eventually returning to British football.

We don’t know if the Saudi Pro League’s current rate of spending is sustainable, but the moves made this summer suggest they are here to stay.
