Champions League quarter-finalists Real Madrid are reportedly considering a shock move for Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino this summer.

The Brazilian has been with the Reds since joining from Hoffenheim in 2015, but will move on this summer.

Firmino rejected a new contract at Anfield, making him a free agent at the end of his contract in June.

And now, Spanish publication El Nacional are reporting that Real Madrid are exploring the option of bringing the forward to the Bernabeu.

Club president Florentino Perez is said to be monitoring Firmino’s situation as Los Blancos search for a back-up option to Karim Benzema.

The report states that Madrid are now hesitant when purchasing strikers, as they don’t trust many or are too expensive.

Perez is said to have ‘learnt a lesson’ after the £52 million acquisition of Luka Jovic. The Serbian flopped at the Bernabeu and now plies his trade with Fiorentina in Italy.

Firmino will be remembered in Liverpool for being part of the lethal front three with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane that led the Reds to their first Premier League title back in 2019-20.

The 31-year-old also played a part in the Reds’ Champions League winning campaign in 2018-19 and their FA Cup triumph last season.

His game time has been limited in recent times following the arrivals of Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.

Despite this, Firmino is still Liverpool’s second highest goalscorer in the Premier League this term. In just 22 appearances, he has nine goals and four assists.
