BANGOR 12.50
YGGDRASIL (system – Jane Williams, recent run)
I had a long conversation with Jane Williams at Warwick last week where she had four runners, and she suggested that her horses were generally behind in their work. She even expressed embarrassment about how fat one or two of hers looked in comparison to their rivals!
It’s been a tough time for the yard with Jane’s son, jockey Chester Williams, suffering a serious injury and hopefully their luck will turn with YGGDRASIL in this 2m4f handicap chase. He won this race last year as a four-year-old when trained by Jane’s former partner Nick Williams and he’ll come on for his Worcester comeback effort when a modest third of seven. That took his record in handicap company to 13113 (3-5) and he won’t mind if conditions ease.
AYR 1.15
HATTONS GARDENS (system – Sandy Thomson, winter runners)
Sandy Thomson-trained runners tend to perform best in the peak winter period and, since the beginning of 2012, had we simply bet all the stable’s representatives from November to January we’d have found 83 winners from 431 bets (19.3% strike-rate) for a huge profit of £243.05 to a £1 level stake at SP. HATTONS GARDENS can keep the ball rolling.
BANGOR 2.00
BENNYS KING (system – seasonal pattern)
BENNYS KING tends to come good towards the end of the calendar year, recording form figures in November or December of 21111551P (5-9) for a profit of £23.88 to a £1 level stake at SP. Dan Skelton’s veteran is going to be a big price after pulling up in both starts last term and could be worth a speculative interest.
BANGOR 3.05
NAYATI (system – Donald McCain, handicap at hurdles at Bangor, recent run)
Donald McCain has a cracking record with his handicap hurdlers at Bangor – one of his local tracks – especially with those returning to the track within 28 day of their previous outing. Since the beginning of 2011, he’s won with 40 of the 122 qualifiers (32.8% strike-rate) for a fantastic profit of £133.57 to the usual £1 stake at SP. NAYATI has only qualified once previously, winning at odds of 13-2, and looks worth an small bet to build on his 16-1 Cheltenham third which came just 19 days ago.
KEMPTON 7.00
GERALT OF RIVIA (system – first run after a wind operation, 2-3yos, Polytrack)
Certain racing surfaces are kinder to horses who have experienced breathing difficulties and Polytrack certainly fits into that category. It’s also a case of the shorter the trip, the less likely those breathing problems will reoccur.
This holds true in jumps racing as well, with horses running over 2m-2m4f after a wind op outperform those running over 3m+. Since wind operations had to be declared in late January 2018, young horses (aged two or three) are 24 from 116 when running over 5f-7f on Polytrack on their first run following the procedure for a profit of £32.11.
GERALT OF RIVIA actually went into my tracker after his debut 25-1 tenth of 14 at Newbury back in May, as it was hard to make ground from off the pace that day and he reportedly lost a shoe. He finished a solid second in a 6f Ffos Las nursery last time and the subsequent wind op can help him to get off the mark from a useful draw in stall 5.
