HUNTINGDON 2.07

ROUGE VIF (system – Harry Whittington stable switchers, hurdles)

Harry Whittington does well at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards, especially the hurdlers. He’s won with eight of the 50 qualifiers for a profit of £50.50 to a £1 level stake at SP.

No less than 17 of the beaten horses finished second or third, mostly at each-way prices. ROUGE VIF, returning to the yard after a fruitless chase campaign for Paul Nicholls, looks very interesting now back over hurdles.

HUNTINGDON 2.37

LE BREUIL & BALLINSLEA BRIDGE (system – 10yos in veterans’ handicap chases)

Ten-year-olds, the youngest age group eligible to compete in veterans’ handicap chases, outscore their older rivals by some way and only two of the four runners qualify in this 2m7.5f contest.

LE BREUIL is the obvious one and is priced accordingly but BALLINSLEA BRIDGE is far from a forlorn hope as the return to a right-handed track will suit after May’s fourth at Bangor. I’ll probably back Ballinslea Bridge to win and have a saver on the Le Breuil/Ballinslea Bridge forecast.

CHELMSFORD 7.30

OLD PORT (system – The Gurkha, 1m1f-1m2f)

Progeny of the sire The Gurkha seem to fare best in a narrow distance range from nine to ten furlongs. Backing all qualifiers would have found 26 winners from 148 bets (17.6 strike-rate) for a profit of £189.95 to a £1 level stake at SP.

OLD PORT caught the eye when fourth from off the pace at Newmarket last time and will be much happier back on synthetics. His full All-Weather record reads 5331114171 (5-10), improving to 11111 (5-5) when racing over 1m+ at tracks other than Lingfield where the sharp turns seem to find him out.
