2022 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe: Luxembourg Tops 20 Runners
At the final declaration stage on Thursday, the top 20-rated horses entered for today’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe all stood their ground, which means we’ll see a maximum field for Europe’s richest flat race.
The former Melbourne Cup winner, Verry Elleegant was the big high profile horse to miss out earlier in the week as she was rated behind 20+ horses already engaged in the race – she’s going to run in Saturday’s Prix de Royallieu instead.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained Luxembourg @ 4/1 with 888Sport remains in the race as the Arc favourite with most bookmakers – the Ballydoyle handler looks to win the Arc for a third time, while O’Brien also has his Royal Ascot scorer Broome in the race.
Last year, we saw a surprise winner as the German-trained Torquator Tasso @ 15/2 with 888Sport added to the countries last Arc winner – Danedream in 2011 – and the Marcel Weiss-trained 5 year-old is back for more on Sunday to try and defend his title – Frankie Dettori, who has won the Arc 6 times, gets the leg-up on the German horse.
If successful, he’ll become the third ‘back-to-back’ winner of the Arc since 2013, with Treve and the mighty Enable both winning the race in consecutive seasons in recent times.
The 5 year-old Alpinista @ 5/1 with 888Sport is another leading fancy to stand her ground. The Sir Mark Prescott runner will be looking to win her eighth race on the spin after landing the Yorkshire Oaks last time out. However, we’ve only seen three winners aged 5 or older win the race since 1976, which is not great news for this classy grey mare.
Of the rest, we’ll also see this year’s Irish Derby winner – Westover @ 10/1 with 888Sport – in the race as the Ralph Beckett horse looks to give his handler his first Arc success.
Trainer John Gosden, who has won the Arc three times since 2015 will pin his hopes on Mishriff @ 25/1 with 888Sport , while this year’s Coral-Eclipse hero Vadeni @ 8/1 with 888Sport will be a leading hope for the home-based yards, with Jean-Claude Rouget looking to add to their 2020 success in the race.
There is also some added international spice to the race with Titleholder @ 9/1 with 888Sport coming over from Japan as this horse racing loving nation eye up a first Arc win. This 4 year-old has won his last three and will have plenty of oriental interest from his home-based fans.
Finally, it would be foolish to ignore any runners for the powerful Andre Fabre yard – they’ve won the Arc an incredible eight times over the years and Fabre is the leading trainer in the races history. He runs Mare Australis this year.
La Parisienne, Le Destrier and True Testament were the three that missed out at the final declaration stage.
