A small but select field of six Prince Of Wales’s Stakes runners will take part in the feature Group 1 race on day two of Royal Ascot this year. This mile-and-a-quarter contest for older horses includes a previous Derby winner in Adayar, as well as the British and Irish Champion Stakes heroes Bay Bridge and Luxembourg.Â

Adayar & Luxembourg Locked Together as Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Runners & Joint-Favourites
While none of the sextet have tasted victory at the Royal meeting before, one will etch their name onto an illustrious roll of honour. Adayar is a leading hope for Godolphin, who have only owned the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes winner once in the last 20 years.
Challenging the 2021 Epsom Derby hero for favouritism, however, is Irish raider Luxembourg. Whether the mile-and-a-quarter distance is optimum for either is a matter open to debate however, with the Aidan O’Brien colt needing almost every yard of this trip to win the Irish Champion Stakes last autumn.
Outside the market principals, last year’s second Bay Bridge is again among Prince Of Wales’s Stakes runners for the winningest active trainer at Royal Ascot, Sir Michael Stoute. My Prospero was an unlucky loser at the meeting 12 months ago too, so could have a big run in him. Read on for more about all six entrants…

Complete Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Runners Guide 2023
1. Adayar
- Age: 5
- Rating: 121
- Draw: Stall 3
- Jockey: William Buick
- Trainer: Charlie Appleby
- Recent Form: 41/221145/12-1
- Ascot Wins: 2021 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes
- Notable Race Wins: 2021 Epsom Derby, 2023 Gordon Richards Stakes
- Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Odds: 7/2 (from 9/4)
Followed-up his Derby triumph two years ago with King George success here on fast ground. Has put in two weakening efforts over course and distance on softer going in last couple of editions of the Champion Stakes.
Connections aim to increase his commercial value at stud by winning a top level race over a mile-and-a-quarter. With his best form over further, however, it remains to be seen if he’s truly top class at this trip.
Reappearance win in Gordon Richards Stakes has worked out well, however, with a first soft ground victory since his juvenile days. Obviously commands respect.
2. Bay Bridge
- Age: 5
- Rating: 122
- Draw: Stall 5
- Jockey: Richard Kingscote
- Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute
- Recent Form: 34/1111/1251-32
- Ascot Wins: 2022 Champion Stakes
- Notable Race Wins: 2022 Brigadier Gerard Stakes
- Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Odds: 11/4 (from 4/1)
Yard has won this event twice in the last five years with five-year-olds and runner-up here 12 months ago. Not disgraced when placed in France and Ireland this spring, having never raced abroad before.
Now down slightly in trip after being held half-a-length by Luxembourg in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. Officially 1lb behind that one, but 1lb better than Adayar.
Off level weights, he has to be in the conversation, especially if judged on last autumn’s course and distance victory in the Champion Stakes. May prefer some rain, so it’s good rather than good to firm underfoot.
3. Classic Causeway
- Age: 4
- Rating: 110
- Draw: Stall 4
- Jockey: Julien Leparoux
- Trainer: Kenneth McPeek
- Recent Form: 132/1100313376-264
- Ascot Wins: None
- Notable Race Wins: 2022 Belmont Derby
- Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Odds: 125/1 (from 100/1)
American raider and one of the few Prince Of Wales’s Stakes runners who can be ruled out of contention. Winless in seven races on his side of the Atlantic since capturing the 2022 Belmont Derby last summer.
Particularly poor showing on dirt and turf the last twice this spring when sixth of seven in the Oaklawn Handicap and Arlington Stakes. Needs a career best.
4. Luxembourg
- Age: 4
- Rating: 123
- Draw: Stall 1
- Jockey: Ryan Moore
- Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
- Recent Form: 111/3117-51
- Ascot Wins: None
- Notable Race Wins: 2021 Vertem Futurity Trophy, 2022 Irish Champion Stakes, 2023 Tattersalls Gold Cup
- Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Odds: 7/4 (from 9/4)
Tops official ratings after Irish Champion and Tattersalls Gold Cup wins. The concern with this Irish raider is his efforts in-between those Group 1 victories.
Looked as though he was outpaced and then impeded when seventh in the Arc, but fewer excuses for tame reappearance effort in the Mooresbridge Stakes. Has a consistency question mark against him.
Just about sets the standard at this trip on the pick of his form. Not a solid favourite by any means, though, but may have more to offer after three wins from four starts at the distance.
5. Mostahdaf
- Age: 5
- Rating: 121
- Draw: Stall 6
- Jockey: Jim Crowley
- Trainers: John & Thady Gosden
- Recent Form:Â 111011/122610-14
- Ascot Wins: None
- Notable Race Wins: 2022 Gordon Richards Stakes, 2022 September Stakes, 2023 Neom Turf Cup
- Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Odds: 18/1 (from 25/1)
Earned lofty rating with seven-length romp in Saudi Arabia on reappearance. Couldn’t back it up when beat that far into fourth in the Sheema Classic latest.
Something to find with Bay Bridge on last year’s Brigadier Gerard form and twice beaten at this meeting in the 2021 St James’s Palace and 2022 Hardwicke Stakes.
Difficult to know what to expect from him, but he’s hardly alone among Prince Of Wales’s Stakes runners in that this year. Lacks consistency and can be ruled out on that basis.
6. My Prospero
- Age: 4
- Rating: 121
- Draw: Stall 2
- Jockey: Tom Marquand
- Trainer: William Haggas
- Recent Form: 3/11313-4
- Ascot Wins: None
- Notable Race Wins: 2022 Prix Eugene Adam
- Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Odds: 5/1 (from 4/1)
Unlucky in-running in the St James’s Palace here 12 months ago and similar story when again third in Champion Stakes over course and distance in the autumn. Eye-catching and staying on into fourth in the Lockinge on reappearance in relation to a tilt at this.
Won on good to firm, good and good to soft ground. Likes to be played late, so will need all his cards to drop right but is capable of a bold show in this company.
Very little to find with both Bay Bridge and Adayar on their last clash. Can only benefit from stepping back up in trip here. May be the value in a trappy betting heat.
