Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has privately and publicly apologised to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard after taking a swipe at his 2014 slip.

Steven Gerrard’s infamous 2014 slip that sent Demba Ba in on goal to help Manchester City to the Premier League title has come back into the headlines this last week, after Pep Guardiola appeared to mock the former Liverpool midfielder’s mistake.

Guardiola was responding to City’s alleged breaches of financial regulation charges when he said “was that our fault?”, referring to Gerrard’s slip.

Guardiola’s Comments

In his press conference ahead of City’s clash against Arsenal, Guardiola revealed that he has apologised to Gerrard.

“I apologise to Steven Gerrard for my unnecessary stupid comments about him.” he said.

“He knows how I admire him and his career, what he has done for this country. I’m ashamed of myself, he doesn’t deserve it.

“I truly believe my comments about defending my club but I didn’t represent my club well putting his name in these stupid comments. I am so sorry to him, his kids, wife, family. It was stupid.”

City’s alleged financial breaches may be all over the headlines at the minute, but it provided no distractions to the players over the weekend.

Guardiola’s side defeated Unai Emery’s Aston Villa 3-1, with Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez all netting in the first-half.

It wasn’t all positive for City however, as Erling Haaland was forced off at the break due to injury.

An update on the forward’s fitness was provided in the press conference.

“We train this afternoon so right now I don’t know,” Guardiola said.

“Yesterday was a recovery for the Aston Villa game, that’s all.”

Up next for the Citizens is a top-of-the-table clash at the Emirates.

Arsenal drew against Brentford at the weekend, and now only have a three point advantage over City at the top of the Premier League table.

Premier League betting sites have City as the favourites to win the tie, priced at around 11/8.
