Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has delivered his prediction for Man City vs Liverpool by saying he thinks Pep Guardiola’s side will secure a “massive three points” at home against the Reds.

After a two week break from club football, the Premier League is back.

Not only is it back, but it’s back with a bang as Liverpool take on Manchester City in the opening game early on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium.

It’s an important stage in City’s season as they look to keep up with league-leaders Arsenal in an attempt to keep their title retainment hopes alive.

They are tasked with overcoming an eight-point deficit to Arsenal, but have a game in hand on the Gunners.

Their form ahead of the international window was sensational. They have won their last six matches in all competitions. This includes an impressive 7-0 drubbing of RB Leipzig in the Champions League last-16.

It’ll be a tough task for Jurgen Klopp’s side coming to Manchester to get a result. Their form ahead of the internationals was fairly poor.

Sitting in sixth, five points behind Newcastle, Liverpool have won just two of their last six matches in all competitions.

Erling Haaland is touch and go for the tie, as Phil Foden is ruled out in what may be a major boost for the Reds.

Luis Diaz may also return for Liverpool having been involved in first team training. They will be without Thiago, Stefan Bajcetic and Calvin Ramsay however, all through injury.

Plenty have offered their opinions ahead of the match, with Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal forward Paul Merson delivering his in his weekly column.

Paul Merson Man City vs Liverpool Prediction

“This is a huge game for Manchester City and they cannot afford to slip up. If they drop points here, they could find themselves 10 points behind Arsenal.” Merson said.

“Liverpool aren’t going to dominate the ball and will use their pace on the counter with Salah, Nunez, and Gakpo. Manchester City do leave open spaces at the back and Liverpool will need to exploit them.”

Merson then went on to speak about Liverpool’s unpredictable form.

“Liverpool have been a bit like a bag of rebels, and Jurgen Klopp doesn’t know what he’s going to get from his team.

“One minute they’re beating United and City and the next, they’re losing to Bournemouth away from home.”

Haaland has been marked as a doubt for the fixture at the Etihad, but Merson expects the forward to be involved.

“I would be shocked if Erling Haaland isn’t fit for this game – he pulled out of the international break.

“I don’t know which Liverpool are going to turn up, and I’m backing Man City to win a massive three points this weekend.”

Merson’s Prediction: Manchester City 2-0 Liverpool
