Jose Peseiro leads his Nigeria side out in Abidjan for a crucial Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 matchup against Cameroon on Saturday evening, where they’ll be aiming to maintain their unbeaten start to the competition.
The Nigerians underwhelmed in their opener with a 1-1 draw against eventual group winners Equatorial Guinea, but followed that up with narrow 1-0 wins over the hosting Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau to claim second place and advance to the next round.
As for Cameroon, they also drew 1-1 in their opener – against a 10-man Guinea. A 3-1 defeat to Senegal and a dramatic late 3-2 win over Gambia followed, as Rigobert Song’s side pipped their matchday one opponents to second spot on goal difference.
The Super Eagles and the Indomitable Lions have a long standing rivalry in this tournament, with Cameroon notably lifting the AFCON trophy in Lagos back in 2000 at the expense of the Nigerians.
In recent times, the Cameroonians haven’t been the force that they once were however, and are winless across the last three competitive meetings between the pair. This includes a 3-2 Round of 16 defeat when they last met in competitive play at the the 2019 edition of the tournament in Egypt.

Peseiro decided to stick with a back three against Guinea-Bissau in the final game of the group, and one can only think that he’ll opt for the same when taking on Cameroon.
Former Premier League winger Ademola Lookman dropped to the bench in the final group game, however he is largely expected to return to the line-up alongside Willliam Troost-Ekong.
