Rishi Sunak
Sunak lost out to Truss in September’s leadership race as his 60,399 votes from Conservative party members proved almost 21,000 less than that of his rival. Sunak warned Truss that her policy of tax cuts appeared unsustainable and so it has proved.
The Winchester College educated Tory has an estimated personal wealth of £200m and now looks set to take charge of the country, with his odds now as short as even money.

Penny Mordaunt
Penny Mordaunt backed Truss six weeks ago after she was eliminated from the leadership race but she could be an interesting outside chance this time around. She delivered a masterful performance in the house of commons this week as Truss hid from view and her stock has risen as a result.
There has not been a coup, she told one Labour MP. She is not “hiding under a desk”, she told another. Then where is she? Taking care of some “very serious matters”, Ms Mordaunt insisted. Perhaps Mordaunt is now ready to step up to take the big job.

Boris Johnson
News that Boris Johnson is preparing to stand in the leadership race has sparked outrage and surprise in equal measure. He resigned as PM just three months ago after repeated scandals over Lockdown parties during Covid 19 times, but could his charisma lead him to a return to 10 Downing Street regardless?
A YouGov poll of Tory members found 55% would for Sunak, who lost out to Ms Truss, if they were able to vote again, and a majority (63%) think former PM Boris Johnson would be a good replacement, with 32% putting him as their top candidate, followed by Mr Sunak at 23%. That could be telling when the result is revealed next Friday.

Ben Wallace
Defence secretary Ben Wallace had ruled himself out as candidate for next Tory leader but seemed to have had change of heart at the Conservative party conference. He was a surprise absentee from the leadership race in July but Wallace is now being touted as a replacement for Liz Truss.
The 52-year-old, a staunch remainer who is a favourite among many Tory members, ruled himself out of this summer’s contest on personal grounds. But when asked at the Conservative party conference this month if he would consider running for leader, he said: “I don’t rule it out.”
