1.50 – Godolphin Flying Start Zetland Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 1m2f ITV
- 1. FLYING HONOURS 2. Liftoff 3. Dear My Friend
FLYING HONOURS @ 5/6 with VirginBet can give the ‘boys in blue’ of Godolphin another winner in this Group 3. He was a close second in the Royal Lodge Stakes last time here and despite that being a disappointing run as a beaten odds-on favourite, the ease in grade here will make life easier and he can get back on track after nice wins at Sandown and Salisbury before that.
Gosden’s Liftoff probably found the softer ground in France against her last time and looks worth giving another chance to, with Frankie riding her for the first time, while the Mark Johnston runner Dear My Friend didn’t get the best of runs through last time at Deauville (bumped) and could do better now upped in trip.
- KEY TRENDS
- 15/15 – Returned 9/1 or shorter in the betting
- 14/15 – Foaled in Feb, Mar or April
- 14/15 – Had raced in the last 4 weeks
- 14/15 – Won no more than twice before
- 13/15 – Placed in the top 3 last time out
- 13/15 – Had won over at least 1m before
- 11/15 – Placed favourites
- 10/15 – Drawn in stalls 2-5 (inc)
- 10/15 – Won last time out
- 6/15 – Came from stalls 2 or 3
- 6/15 – Winning favourites
- 3/15 – Ran at Leicester last time out
- 2/15 – Ridden by Frankie Dettori
- 2/15 – Ridden by Ryan Moore
- 3/15 – Won by a Godolphin-owned horse
- 1/15 – Winners from stall 1

2.25 – Emirates Autumn Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 1m ITV
- 1. SILVER KNOTT 2. Holloway Boy 3. Epictetus
SILVER KNOTT @ 11/4 with VirginBet is worth giving another chance back on better ground. He found the softer conditions not to his liking at Doncaster last time, when a beaten odds-on favourite in the Champagne Stakes last month. However, before that he’d won well at Kempton and Sandown, with the last mentioned an easy G3 win in the Solario Stakes. The Charlie Appleby yard has also done well in the race – winning 3 of the last 5, while William Buick has won 4 of the last 7. He’s taken to get back to winning ways.
Of the rest, Holloway Boy was the shock winner of the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot back in June and has shown that run to be no fluke with placed efforts at Group level the next twice at Goodwood and Newmarket. While it’s also hard to ignore the Gosden/Dettori runner, Epictetus, who was a nice winner on debut – albeit on in a maiden – but is clearly thought to be up to this rise in grade.
- KEY TRENDS
- 16/17 – Ran in the last 4 weeks
- 16/17 – Had won over at least 7f before
- 15/17 – Had raced at least twice before
- 14/17 – Finished 1st or 2nd last time out
- 14/17 – Placed favourites
- 14/17 – Won between 1-2 times before
- 12/17 – Won last time out
- 13/17 – Priced 9/1 or shorter in the betting
- 11/17 – Foaled in Feb or March
- 11/17 – Irish bred
- 6/17 – Winning favourites
- 6/17 – Godolphin winners
- 3/17 – Trained by Charlie Appleby (3 of the last 5)
- 4/17 – Ridden by William Buick (4 of the last 7)
- 7 of the last 15 winners came between stalls 3-5
- 2 of the last 5 winners came from stall 9

3.00 – Darley Dewhurst Stakes (Group 1) (Entire Colts & Fillies) Cl1 7f ITV
- 1. NOSTRUM 2. Chaldean 3. Aesop’s Fables
NOSTRUM @ 2/1 with VirginBet is taken to continue his upward curve and make it 3-from-3 from his opening races. This Kingman colt was impressive last time when taking the G3 Tattersalls Stakes (watch below) over this course and distance, so we know the track is ideal. Richard Kingscote takes over on this Stoute runner from Ryan Moore, who has to ride the O’Brien horse Aesop’s Fables, but that is no negative with the pair teaming up for Epsom Derby glory earlier this season. He looks an exciting prospect that has an entry for the Irish Guineas next season and can remain unbeaten here.
The other Juddmonte horse in the race is Chaldean and this Andrew Balding runner is actually the top-rated in the field. He’s also done little wrong this season – winning his last three, with the last off those a smooth success in the G2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster last month. It could easily be a Juddmonte 1-2!
The final one to mention is the Aidan O’Brien runner, Aesop’s Fables with the yard having a good record in his race (6 wins). Yes, a beaten jolly in the National Stakes at the Curragh last time out, but the better ground here is expected to be more up his street and after winning the G2 Futurity Stakes the time before it would be no shock to see him bounce back for his powerful stable.
- KEY TRENDS
- 20/20 – Raced at least 3 times that season
- 18/20 – Yet to race at Newmarket (Rowley)
- 18/20 – Placed in their last race
- 15/20 – Won over 7f previously
- 15/20 – Favourites placed
- 14/20 – Won at least 3 times previously
- 14/20 – Won their last race
- 14/20 – Won a Group race previously
- 13/20 – Raced at either Goodwood (2), Longchamp (2) or the Curragh (9) last time out
- 13/20 – Foaled in either Feb or March
- 11/20 – Won by an Irish-based stable
- 10/20 – Favourites that won
- 8/20 – Placed horses that came from stall 2
- 6/20 – Returned 20/1 or bigger
- 6/20 – Trained by Aidan O’Brien (6 wins in total)
- 6/20 – Finished in the top 2 in the 2000 Guineas the following season (3 won both)
- 3/20 – Godolphin-owned winners (3 of the last 10)
- 2/20 – Won the Epsom Derby the following season
- 1/20 – Winners that came from stall 1
- The Irish have won 11 of the last 16 runnings
- 3 of the last 12 winners came from stall 3
- Aidan O’Brien has trained 5 of the last 9 winners

3.40 – Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Stakes (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 2m2f ITV
1. RUN FOR OSACR (e/w) 2. Gibraltar 3. Zoffee
RUN FOR OSCAR (e/w) @ 7/2 with VirginBet looks to have plenty going for him in the Ceasrewitch Handicap with the shrewd Charles Byrnes yard having freshened him up with a few months off. He was last seen winning well at Haydock at the start of August, but connections decided to keep him off the track since with this race in-mind. Up 8lbs for that win, but still only has 8-11 in racing weight to carry here and with 16 of the last 20 winners having 9-2 or less this is a plus for him. David Egan has been booked to ride and everything looks set-up for a big effort.
We all know the Willie Mullins yard have a good record in this race, so their entries – Scaramanga, Baby Zeus and Gibraltar all have to be respected. But it’s the last-named of that bunch – Gibraltar @ 11/1 with VirginBet – that stands out. A nice winner at Tramore last time out in August but is another that’s been off the track since to probably protect his mark for this race. Raised 7lbs for that last success, but connections have been clever to book the in-form Saffie Osbourne to ride and claim 3lbs, while in this better race the horse still only has 8-5 to carry – that’s 15lbs less (plus the 3lbs Saffie claims) than last time!
The Henderson-trained Ahorsewithnoname is respected too after good wins at Newbury and York this year and Ryan Moore rides – Henderson is looking for his fourth win in the race. But the final one to note is the Frankie-ridden Zoffee @ 14/1 with VirginBet. Drawn well in 1 will help and this Hugo Palmer runner has been running consistently all season with two wins. Last seen running third at York in a 2m handicap and also didn’t get the best of runs that day so could have easily got nearer. Up just a pound more in the ratings and has had a few months off to get over that busy summer spell. His consistent profile makes him the each-way play in this ultra-competitive handicap.
- KEY TRENDS
- 19/20 – Aged 4 or older
- 16/20 – Carried 9-2 or less
- 15/20 – Had won over at least 1m6f on the flat before
- 15/20 – Had run within the last 2 months
- 14/20 – Returned a double-figure price in the betting
- 14/20 – Finished 4th or better last time out
- 14/20 – Aged 5 or older
- 12/20 – Had won over at least 2m on the flat before
- 11/20 – Had 3 or more previous flat runs that season
- 11/20 – Winning distance – 1 length or less
- 11/20 – Drawn in stall 13 or lower
- 11/20 – Had run at the track before
- 11/20 – Won by a NH trainer
- 9/20 – Had won 4 or more times on the flat before
- 9/20 – The first three home ALL returned a double-figure price
- 9/20 – Placed favourites
- 8/20 – Ran at either Ascot, Chester or Doncaster last time out
- 5/20 – Winning mares
- 4/20 – Winning favourites
- 3/20 – Winners from stall
- 13/20 – Trained by Willie Mullins (3 of last 4 winners)
- 3/20 – Won last time out
- 3/20 – Trained by Nicky Henderson
- 2/20 – Trained by Mark Johnston
- The average winning SP in the last 20 years is 21/1
- Just 4 winning favourites since 1993
