Newcastle United have moved to 11/10 to win the EFL Cup this season after their second leg win against Southampton on Tuesday night.

  • Sean Longstaff opened the scoring after just five minutes
  • Longstaff doubled his tally and Newcastle’s lead just after 20 minutes
  • Che Adams managed to pull a goal back with a powerful effort just before the half hour mark
  • Bruno Guimarães saw red late in the game for a horror tackle
  • Newcastle are now 11/10 to win the EFL Cup this season

Sean Longstaff sent St James’ Park into delirium after just five minutes on Tuesday night, as the midfielder placed a low shot past Gavin Bazunu to hand Newcastle a 2-0 lead on aggregate.

Longstaff doesn’t usually get many goals and with just the one to his name this season, nobody would have expected the 25-year old to double the Magpies advantage against the Saints, but he did just that with a beautiful finish at the end of a great team goal.

Southampton looked down and out with just half an hour played, as they trailed by three goals on aggregate with Newcastle playing some scintillating football. Che Adams gave some much needed hope for the Saints just after half an hour however, as the Scotsman rifled a drilled shot into the corner of Nick Pope’s net from range to make it 3-1 to Newcastle over the two legs.

There was no goals to enjoy in the second period however a red card was shown to Bruno Guimarães in the 80th minute, with a VAR check changing a yellow into red after the Brazilian went studs up into a challenge on Sam Edozie.

A fairly uneventful second half meant that Newcastle advance to the final of the EFL Cup after a 3-1 win against Southampton, where they will face either Manchester United or Nottingham Forest at the end of February.
