Newcastle took another huge step towards Champions League qualification at St. James’ Park this evening as they crucially beat high-flying Brighton 4-1.
A rotated Brighton side saw Alexis Mac Allister, Julio Enciso and Evan Ferguson named on the bench, whilst Levi Colwill was left out of the squad completely.
This handed Newcastle a boost prior to kick-off, as they looked to take a step closer towards Champions League qualification.
Roberto De Zerbi’s possession-based style was clear from the off, but the Seagulls were unable to make the most of having the ball at their feet in front of goal.
They were quickly punished when Deniz Undav turned into his own net after 22 minutes – handing the Magpies an early lead.
Kieran Trippier’s powerfully precise corner struck Undav’s head, before bulging the back of the net – leaving Jason Steele no chance.

Newcastle were in cruise control after the opener, constantly creating threats in Brighton’s final third.
They were rewarded for their persistence on the stroke of half-time, converting from a set-piece once more.
Trippier’s floated free-kick found the head Dan Burn near the far post, who made no mistake in beating Steele across his goal.

Just five minutes into the second period, Undav made up for his own goal by halving the Seagulls’ deficit.
A beautifully placed through ball by Billy Gilmour saw Undav in behind the Magpies defence, where he slotted the ball under Nick Pope to stun the home crowd.

Despite a spirited fight back from Brighton, two late goals from Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes ensured a 4-1 victory for the Magpies.
Newcastle are now on the cusp of Champions League qualification – four points clear of fifth place Liverpool.
