Jadon Sancho’s loan move to Borussia Dortmund is progressing well – but any decision on his long-term future is likely to hinge on Erik ten Hag’s position at Manchester United.

Dortmund sources indicate that there is “plenty of love” still for Sancho, following his time with them before leaving for Old Trafford in 2021, and the player has been pivotal in bringing a move to life.

SportsLens understands the possibility of an 18-month loan has even been pitched as Dortmund look to change the make-up of their attack and reinvigorate Sancho.

And while the idea was put on the back burner so that a deal for the rest of this season could be accelerated, there is potential for further discussion depending on how things go.

Borussia Dortmund Keen On Sancho Loan

Sancho’s ball-carrying skill is something the German side have lacked this season and they hope his ability will spark a change in their league standing, as Dortmund currently sit 15 points adrift of leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

The 23-year-old is eager to resume his career as soon as possible and the chance to do so in familiar surroundings with positive memories being a key driving factor behind the talks over a return to Signal Iduna Park.

A good spell of form could yet lead United into believing Sancho can return to Manchester and live up to his £73million price-tag.

If Ten Hag remains in charge beyond this season though, the chances of such a comeback will be more tricky because of the friction between them.

And that’s when a longer stay in Germany could open up.

There is also the factor of Sancho’s current monetary worth, as United know a successful loan spell will be key to bringing him closer to the huge sum they initially paid for him.

Sancho Fitness Boost Required If Move Gets Go Ahead

Sancho will need to get in top shape quickly if his move to Dortmund gets the green light.

He has not played top-level football since August and has been training on his own, meaning he has been having to show great personal focus and motivation to keep himself in good condition.

Dortmund stars recently learned just how strict their boss Edin Terzic can be when it comes to staying in top condition—as players returning from their winter break were warned they would be fined 1,000 Euros for every kilo of weight they put on since their last session in 2023. The squad head to Marbella on Wednesday for a training camp ahead of the Bundesliga campaign resuming next week.

Sancho had his own training standards criticised publicly by Ten Hag earlier this season and was so angry he turned to social media to defend himself.

The drive to prove he is still one of the game’s most exciting creative players is burning as Sancho now angles for completion of the Dortmund move, having already turned down the advances of clubs in the Saudi Pro League.
